Hey I wanted to come out and do the Tuesday ride at the Rose Bowl. I heard they do like 20 laps or something insane under 1 hour. I hear its ultra fast and really is a burner.

Someone was talking about it in the club one day and I was really interested to see if I could finish it without getting dropped.

I hear pacelines of over 25mph? And reaching low 30's?

How realistic is it to be able to even draft in the paceline? One of the faster riders in our club said that he could barely hang on, so I'm a little curious.

George are you familiar with this ride? Mary?

I've been there the last cpl weeks. Done this ride off and on since early last year. Start is at six at the south end. The ride has been 10 laps most of the times I've done it. 25 on the uphhill leg 35 on the downhill leg. Not much paceline action just a big group hammering, very tight bunch. I got scolded last week for touching my brakes when someone slowed directly in front of me. Got to figure out the right way to handle that next time. Very fast, very challenging, requires a lot of concentration to overcome my natural affinty for doing something stupid. Have yet to complete entire 10 laps. Even experienced riders will bail on the last lap to stay out of the sprinters way.

ovoleg, the Rose Bowl ride goes for 10 laps for an hour and 10 minutes or so. The tempo on the uphill side of the couse can average in the upper 20s somewhere, with accellerations that will climb into the low 30s. On the downhill side it can get pretty strung out, depending on what kind of headwind we pickup around the clubhouse. People get dropped all the and find someplace to jump back in the next time the pack comes by again. This is a fast paced training ride, ridden at intensities that rival race conditions.

cheers

George are you familiar with this ride? Mary?

This is how familiar I am - I don't ride when they do (or I get out of the way as soon as possible by climbing up Salvia Cyn), and/or, I sit, straddling my bike, licking my chops as those boys go by. They may be fast, but not so fast that I can't admire their...um...abilities. :D

George are you familiar with this ride? Mary?On a good day for me I can hang for maybe 2 laps, drop, get back in for another 1 or two laps.....:D
Ovo....you should be able to hang for a few laps at least.....maybe all 10. Come out this Thursday evening and find out...

It's thursday or tuesday?

I'll try to leave work early and make it out.

I dont know if I can but I definately want to try it :) How fast is the sprint?

What are some dont's in that ride? I have good ride etiquette for the most part :D

It's done both Tuesdays and Thursdays. You basically hang on for dear life. The best I was able to do was 1 lap with them ... I think that was at the beginning of the season, when they were not in racing shape. However, if you do it now, they'll be in high gear. Get those legs spinning.

George took a short video with his digital camera ... already asked him to post it here, just so we can see the carnage.

Oh, doesn't the fact that there is an ambulance parked during the pack ride give you a clue?

Tues and Thurs nights, 5:55 pm. You'll be fine with the pack. I'll be there this Thurs from around 5 pm on...

My advice is to stay near the center or left side of the pack.. Most of the crashes happen when the pack pass recreational riders on the right who try to jump in, not realizing that the pack is moving 10+ mph faster than they are..

Silly, there isn't any difference in my mind. Besides, I really only ride, so I'm a rider, and when I ride at the Rose Bowl, it's generally recreational. For me, who would crash within two minutes of trying to hang with the Peloton, the only good ride I get out of that area is when I climb into the canyons...or ride with Jpconrad who is freaky fast. :D

Anyway, like I told Wil, I will post it tomorrow morning.. :D

Oh shush, you hold your own when you wanna. I'm sure if you wanted to hang with the peloton you'd be able to do it.

BTW, it's my understanding that there was another crash Thursday. Does anyone know more about this one? Be careful Ovoleg...

I stayed to the right and said a prayer as the peloton zoomed past my pathetic @ss a few weeks ago. Needless to say, I've changed my RB schedule to days that don't start in "T".:)

This may sound like I'm being facetious, but I'm not ... the question is not whether or not there was a crash, but more of how many and how often. It's sad.

You're smart, Turtle (what's your real name as I feel mean calling you a turtle! :p) I usually wait until they pass and then sprint Salvia Canyon and get up it before they can make it back around.

Being able to stay in that group is more about skill in a pack than aboout fitness. There's an enormous range of skills and fitness there, and knowing how to ride in a hairy pack can save you a *huge* amount of effort. Not being experienced can make you do a lot of extra work. I wouldn't really recommend it as a first "close fast pack" ride.

That said, I don't find it all that useful for practice in a pack or for fitness.

Actually, my real name IS Turtle.......jk, I'm Erik. Yeah, the speed that the group maintains is very impressive, I have no aspirations to try and jump on so I make it a point to steer clear of the Bowl on those days now. I think everyone is happier that way. Oh and yes, the surrounding streets that ascend out of the RB are definitely fun to explore.

Ive ridden in some fast very tight packs before so this shouldn't be anything drastically new. I'm sure I'll do fine, I just want to make the 10 laps, I wouldnt be coming out to this often as it is
1) too far
2) packing my bike is really really annoying and to me stupid because I have flat and hilly terrain which I can push myself on very easily
3) I dont like crashes.

I really do have good etiquette and will be fine if I can't hang fitness wise. I know how to pull off and such. I was just interested to do it once to say I've done it :)

stay near the front.

It's not like a paceline unless you're hanging on the front, so it's not about just pulling off smoothly. You need to be able to pick a safe wheel (near the front) and keep an eye out way up ahead so that you react to things before the person in front of you does.

If you are getting close to blowing up (and it tends to happen on the uphill side), kill yourself to maintain your speed while you work your way to the edge. Other people will appreciate it immensely. One of the big problems is people blowing up in the middle of the pack and slowing down almost as if they slammed on the brakes, followed by a bunch of people behind actually hitting brakes because they couldn't tell that the person two rows up was on the edge already when they turned the corner, and the uphill pushed him over.

Don't ever overlap wheels.
Always ride as if someone else is overlapped on you.
Look before you make a lateral movement. It's a turn signal as much as it is for you to look.

You should come join Jpconrad and me on the Pasadena night rides, Erik. I really enjoyed the one we did last week, and tomorrow we're going up Chantry Flats. :)

Thanks for the invite merider, I saw the thread on the pasadena rides and I'd like to join you folks sometime. Chantry Flats may be a bit beyond my limits for now (well that and I don't have a light which I assume is necessary?) but I'll check that thread to see if you guys do the flat route sometime:)

Hey Ovo,

Really looking forward to your report. I enjoyed your report from when you attempted Fargo, maybe Fixer (sorry George, I forgot you new handle) can be there again and take some video or at least some pics...that would be cool, we could then live vicariously through you. By the way, I'm being serious, it would be cool to see some video by Fixer of you in the pack.

Why don't you come out and do some repeats with me sometime and I'll consider it. This has to be a give-give relationship not just give-take lol.

Also, you're strong enough for alot of the SFVBC rides but you don't come out!
