Bicycle Mechanics - Slipping gears

I might need a bit more info to ask for proper help, but my gears slip like crazy. It happened after we moved and I had the bike in the back of a Uhaul with a bunch of other miscelaneous stuff.

Anyway, I am afraid to stand up and go for it because every time I do, the gears slip.

Any ideas?

Does the derailleur try to autoshift? Does the chain jump from one cog to another? If so the cable is out of adjustment or out of position. Follow the cable to see that it is in the correct position with no kinks.
Another possibility is a bent derailleur hanger.
If the chain has been replaced and the old one wass worn out the cassette (or freewheel) may be worn and cause the chain to skip.
