Introductions - Ahoy hoy from Utah

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey everybody,
I've been a rider for about 2 years now. I bought my first bike, a Specialized Sirrus, in July of 2005 and have been loving the thrill that is road biking.
I used to switch off running and biking, but I was mostly a runner. Then two weeks ago I decided that I was sick of running so I've been stepping up my biking a lot lately and I absolutely love it. Now I just want a new bike, some biking shorts (I don't have any yet! my butt is not thanking me for that)... and a Garmin Edge. haha.
Anyway, my name's Tom and I live in sunny, hot, and dry Saint George, Utah.
Feel free to say hello and hopefully I can get to know some (or all) of you!

Hello Tom, those biking shorts aren't an absolute necessity, but they do make it much easier! A specialized Sirrus, that's a nice bike.
Don't forget to visit the regional forum for the Mountain-Plain area, too.
Welcome to BF!

Welcome, thejanitor! Beautiful riding, skiing, and hiking terrain that you've got out there is sunny Utah. What a wonderful place to call home! Enjoy your time here.

HEY Tom, WELCOME .. about them shorts; mountain bike or BMX stuff may be the answer. Cycling specific underwear ought to be considered as well,it can be less obtrusive and less obvious when worn with "regular" shorts. It may sound creepy reading me on this, at least I didn't post a photo and ask you, "so ya think these shorts make my #%^ look big ?", more outlandish than either notion for sure, no ?

Thanks for the invites everybody! Utah sure is a beautiful place. I love it here.
old and new - hahah. Yeah, thanks for sparing me the picture of you in a spandex diaper, as my brother refers to them. I'm thinking I'll probably just go to my local bike store and try some pairs on and maybe buy some there. THat's probably a better idea than just blindly buying a pair online.

old_and_new is right--my husband does not like to wear straight spandex, so he wears mountain biking shorts instead. He doesn't have to worry about his appearance when he needs to go into stores, but he gets the benefits of having the chamois....

Welcome thejanitor. I own both types of shorts, the baggy MTB ones with lycra shorts inside and the traditional roadie style. A few years back I bought my first pair of bib shorts. I will not wear anything but bibs now. Just a thought, or maybe a warning. If you ever try bibs, you will not want to wear anything else for longer rides.

Well, I just bought a pair of Pearl Izumi Quest shorts from my local bike store. Surprisingly, they were the same price as they would have been off PI's website, but I didn't have to pay shipping! That alone restored my faith in buying stuff from local bike stores and not getting ripped off.
I can't wait to try them on my ride tomorrow. They feel really weird walking around in them so I guess it's a good thing I won't be doing much walking in them. haha

Hey, bikeutah! It's not a very big place, so that's entirely possible. haha
Welcome to BF! PM me if you're ever in SLC and want to know what's going on!

Hey Kemmer! Sweet, thanks for the offer. My brother and his best friend are both bikers up in the SLC area too. I am trying to talk them into doing a century up there next May with me. Hopefully we can make it happen.
Damn southerners!
Welcome.

Welcome.
Haha. We are taking over the (biking) world.
At least you're in the low-LDS density portion of the state.
