The highest I got was 186 until I did a few races and hit 189. I'm not saying that racing improved my max, just that it motivated me to push that extra bit.

But wouldn't power data give you progress in the performance sense, while HR indicates whether you're going to kill yourself?

I guess I'll finish reading that training book and find out. :p

HR is reactive (and there is a host of other reasons why HR is an unreliable lagging indicator to train by). It tells of the pain you were in while power tells you the performance you are doing now. when you stop pedaling your power drops to zero meanwhile your HR can continue to "climb" for many seconds afterwards.

Here is something you will find very interesting...While riding with your powermeter, do a climb based on HR and then look at the graph. If you try to maintain a certain HR your power will continue to drop (read it as performance) as you continue on the climb. You think you did great because you kept your HR in the same range and then you look at your wattage output and you actually were dropping your output.

According to my bikejournal.com (http://www.bikejournal.com/profiles.asp?rname=jnatiw&public=1), this year my max HR has been 210. I don't really remember anything about that ride...

183, which is two beats higher than last year.

Hit 192 over the weekend while riding up Torrey Pines. In the past I've been able to get to 201 on the bike.

I hit 198 at the Paramount Criterium yesterday. That is the highest I have seen since I did a VO2 max test in 1998 where I hit 205. I believe getting older and taking a few years off the bike is why I won't see my max in the 200s again.
