Southern California - Torrey Pines climb tomorrow

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

ONE climb is plenty. I haven't been on the bike for over a week. We'll aim for a sub-9 minute climb. Of course, I have no clue how fast that is or isn't...
So 6:30 from your apartment cool with you?
If anyone else wants to join in on this, let us know.
The climb itself is a little under 2 miles from bottom to top. I don't think I've ever timed it myself...haven't ridden it in a while in fact. I've pretty much stopped doing weekend rides but I have been commuting by bike religiously.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the company on a weekday ride, that was short n sweet (not enough to break a sweat though)
I hate you.

Pulse is down to 95 now. I don't recover very quickly. I guess I need to ride more often.
That does seem like a really long time, Jason... Could it be a medical issue?
It's down to about 70 now. It's not unusual after a long tough ride for my pulse to be around 100 for several hours afterward. I'll ask my parents sometime whether they think I should be concerned.

Speaking of the Torrey Pines climb - give this a read when you have moment:

RAMM legend Pete Penseyres completed 31 hill repeats in under 7 hours. I wish they still did this event - would be a good suffer fest. I used repeats on the hill to train for KOM. Would be interesting too see how many I could do.
Maybe we should try and reinstitute this ride as a SoCal BF event!
I might be able to ride a flat century that quickly. :o

"...Penseyres last lap was accomplished in 11 minutes."
This is cool, I just need to sit out the first 30 laps and then I might be able to beat him up the climb once. lol

LOL I love how the 8th place rider is listed as "disappeared"

Blue nose I have routinely done 10-15 repeats. On longer repeat days I have done 20 and 25 (10,000 feet of gain) repeats. I guess I wll do 31 just for kicks. Wanna join me?

You bet. When you get back from RAMM we should put together this ride.

Agreed. I would rather try to climb Palomar four times... at least I only have to pass by the same point 8 times (4 times up, 4 times down) for a century. Only 4 times if I split the climbs between South Grade and East Grade. Seeing the same point 62 times would drive me a bit crazy.

But it's also a lot closer, which you can do before work (though not 31 times). ;)

How about 3.1 times? What a decimal place between friends?

I don't know, I could think of worse hills to spend the whole day on. The views of the ocean on the descent are quite beautiful.

You do make a good point. Maybe I'll give the 31 climbs a shot sometime. Sure, blue_nose and Vireo will be home, showered off, and stuffed with food while I'm still out there slugging it out, but it's only like 12-13k vertical feet of climbing. Not any worse than Breathless Agony in that respect, and without unmaintained trails, ultra-steep sections, or high altitude sections to wear one down. And less vertical than a Palomar century (South Grade, East Grade, South Grade, East Grade) requires. And though I'm way slower than blue_nose or Vireo, I'll see them repeatedly since they can't ride too far away from me on such a ride. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime.

I think I'll give it a go too, but I'll only do a "ride till I drop" which will be way less than 31 climbs. Figured since my TP speed hasn't been improving lately, mind as well try a different approach. :)
If you're going for 31 climbs, you should really park your car at the bottom with all the food & water; since you'll be going nowhere and there're no stores in the vicinity.

Sure I'll give 31 times a shot too. But I'll give up after the third or fourth.:p

Good riding with you guys this morning. I now have another data point for measuring progress being that it was the first time I timed it.
Instead of Jelly Beans, we should try to get Baskin Robbins to sponsor the event so that we get to try every flavor that they have!

The problem with 31 repeats at TP (besides failing to finish) would be the constant stream of energetic people with fresh legs zooming by you like you were stopped.
"I'm on my 26th repeat" you would wheeze sheepishly as they passed by in a feeble effort to explain your crawling pace.
And as you recede in the distance they will be thinking "Yeah, right. Pathetic loser-poser-dweeb!"

Well, beyond a certain point you'll get be too slow to stay on the bike and will have to stand on the ground or walk the bike. At this time, you can periodically look at your bike funny and act like there's something wrong with the bike.
I'm just applying what I've read about "learning to use clipless pedals" to this situation.

Ok it sounds like we have the makings of a BF ride when I get back.

Sounds good to me. So I assume we'll stash some water and food at the top. A rest stop every 3 miles... I guess I'd better not spend too much time at each rest stop. :p

how about just parking in the lot at the bottom and using that as the rest stop?

Sounds like we have a ride in the making. I think my wife and kids might be able to help with some of the support.
31 flavours - I love it!
The first Annual Baskin and Robbins Torrey Pines Century. A flavour for every climb.
So... who wants to write to Baskin Robbins to solicit sponsorship?

I think I'll just go ahead and puke and/or sit on the toilet right now.
31 Flavors TP Century...I dunno blue nose, after about the 5th or 6th time down, even looking at the ocean would get pretty old.
Maybe there's a law of diminishing returns in effect. The 1st one, you're jazzed and energized. The 2nd one, while not quite as good as the 1st, is still okay. Laps 3 through 29 suck leprous yak testicles. But on laps 30 and 31, you enter the zen-like state of nirvanic euphoria that only comes from surviving such a mind-numbingly boring ordeal...giving you such a refreshing jolt that you lose your mind and ask, "So, guys, when are we doing this bad boy again?"*

Who said this was going to be fun anyway :D
We are trying to create a killer training ride. Some would call it pushing yourself to become a better cyclist. Others equate it to sucking yak testies. Tomato - Tom-A-toe...
