So it looks like I'll get home relatively early tonight. I think I'll try to actually get out of bed and go riding tomorrow. Since it's been a while--last ride was on Memorial Day--I think I'll take it easy out to the base of Torrey Pines and then try to break my personal best on Torrey Pines (outer route). Seeing as my personal best is a rather poor 9:50--I'm sure I've done better before, but I didn't have a great climb the one time I timed myself--this should be low hanging fruit that's easy picking even if I'm not fully in shape. I just need to make sure not to chase some faster guy up Genessee on the way out there like I did the last time. I might even take a milder route out there just to minimize the temptation to hammer it up the hill on the way out there and burn out my fast twitch muscles before I even get to Torrey Pines.
I would like to think that I can break 9 minutes. Unfortunately, what I think doesn't count. Only what I actually manage to do counts. We'll see...
By the way, Dave, you game for a Torrey Pines PR attempt early tomorrow morning? :D
DaveSANYYZ
06-05-07, 07:03 PM
Sure! What time? I'm normally up by 6am. ;)
So far my PR's have all been done near the end of a very social <30 miles group ride, so it's as if I got well rested right before the climb.
Dan, do you want to join in on the fun? :D

06-05-07, 07:05 PM
Roll at 6:30 from your apartment? Maybe if I have a riding partner I'll actually have better incentive to ride regularly on weekdays. (ie fear of letting my riding partner down)
What's your PR nowadays? I think you said 9:20 or something, right? I think we could beat that... a bit of psychological boost from chasing or being chased should be worth a few seconds over the course of nine minutes.
DaveSANYYZ
06-05-07, 07:08 PM
My PR these days have been 9:10, but that's only with one climb at the end of a group ride. My previous PR of 9:30, I was able to sustain for 2/3 repeats.... so 9:10 I'm not sure it's sustainable. Let's see! :D

06-05-07, 07:10 PM
Hopefully, others can join in too. We can have a large group.
I have to admit though, based on how you can "power up" all of a sudden in the goodbye GMR ride and leave me in the dusts, you will have no problem getting into the 8mins or lower.
jschen
06-05-07, 07:11 PM
ONE climb is plenty. I haven't been on the bike for over a week. We'll aim for a sub-9 minute climb. Of course, I have no clue how fast that is or isn't...
So 6:30 from your apartment cool with you?
If anyone else wants to join in on this, let us know.

That was because you rode a century the day before, silly. But something in the 8's would be nice.

If anyone else wants to join in on this, let us know.Sure. Actually I think we should me at your apartment since it's less of a detour. We'll go up that road where I normally pick you up, then ride straight up to the T-intersection at Genesee and go from there.
BTW, even without a century prior, my TP timing is still in the low 9min range. I guess these days I am limited by something else.

06-05-07, 07:17 PM
Okay, Nobel and Regents, 6:30 AM it is. I won't rule out repeats if we're both feeling good, but I get a feeling that I will not be up for more than a single climb if the first climb is an all-out effort.

How do you guys get up so early?
jschen
06-05-07, 07:45 PM
I'm trying to get back into waking up early. I haven't managed to drag myself out for a workday ride yet this year. :o Tomorrow will be a first in that regard. I want to get back to riding 5 times/week (Tues-Thurs, Sat and Sun) and doing 100+ miles and 10k+ vertical feet each week. Those targets aren't hard to hit if I get back to doing my Mt Soledad loop four times a week. That's 62 miles and 6800 vertical feet right there.

How do you guys get up so early?
I don't - but I may get up early for this. I was going to get in a quick Torrey Pines run tonight but child shuttle duties intervened.
If I manage to get up in time, are you going via La Jolla Village Dr to Torrey Pines Rd?
jschen
06-05-07, 07:49 PM
I was thinking of going that way, but I think Dave made the executive decision that we're going up Genessee. I hope we don't race each other up Genessee and burn ourselves out before even getting out to Torrey Pines.

I did it before... going from couch potato who hadn't done any real exercise for several years to suddenly riding on that schedule. (Admittedly, initially, those five rides a week totaled more like 40 miles and probably under 2000 vertical feet.) I can do it again. I just need to manage to drag myself out of bed.

06-05-07, 07:56 PM
James, I'd bet money that you can beat that time.
I realized the other day that if I'm to give myself an outside chance of doing Everest Challenge this year, I need to start training NOW. And training LOTS. I'd settle for just doing day one and being too pooped to care about day two. But that still requires me to climb fast enough at an endurance pace to actually finish a ride with something like 18000 feet of climbing. My pokey pace at Breathless Agony won't get the job done.

Yup... if you're up in time, we'll see you there. I hope not to race up Genessee... that's what did in my other Torrey Pines timed climb. I had a group of four pass me just before the Genessee hill, but then as I hit the hill, someone was riding my wheel and I felt compelled to ride a bit faster than 10 MPH. So I did 12 MPH but lost that person. Caught up to the other group and passed them at 13 MPH. One guy in the group went after me and took off at 15 MPH. I gave chase but couldn't hold that speed. I was tired by the time I reached the top of Genessee.

IF I manage to get up, I may join. I'd say it's unlikely though.
What's the Mt. Soledad loop that you do? Sounds like a pretty good ride.
jschen
06-05-07, 09:12 PM
Mt Soledad loop:
Start at corner of Genessee and Nobel heading west on Nobel
Turn right on Via La Jolla
Turn left on La Jolla Village Dr (incline #1)
Turn left on Torrey Pines Rd
Veer left to Hidden Valley Rd (start incline #2, biggest climb of ride)
Turn right on Via Capri (start hard part of incline #2)
Turn right at La Jolla Scenic Dr
Turn left at Soledad Mountain Rd
Turn left at Garnet St
Becomes Balboa Ave (inclines #3 and 4)
Turn left on Genessee (inclines #5-7, #5 really ought not to count)
Back to start
The inclines were numbered by me back when I first rode this loop. Drop into granny gear = give it a number.

06-05-07, 09:40 PM
how long does your normal loop take? elapsed time wise
jschen
06-05-07, 09:43 PM
My best (not including stops for traffic controls) is 58:08 from right outside my apartment back to right outside my apartment. It hasn't been a "normal" part of my riding for a really long time, though, so I think I can do a bit better once back into normal riding. Especially considering that my best was in light drizzle on a maiden ride of my R3.

06-05-07, 09:48 PM
so about 1hr 15-20 minutes? hummmm I'm done throwing the newspaper at 5:30ish and have to be at my other job at 8-8:30. My route is over in PQ, just on the other side of the 56. I may join you two if you don't mind. I'll prolly bring my SS since my red bike has a flat and I havn't looked at the tire yet, I rode it back to the car flat since I was less then a mile away.

After the intersection, we can also do a drop down to I-5, up Sorrento Valley or something (SDBC route), then across to the ocean at the intersection right after SR-56. I guess you can tell I suck at directions, so if you guys have better suggestions, we can do that. :)
For now to avoid confusions, let's go with 6:30am at Nobel & Regents, then up to T-intersection at Genessee. I'll check back in again at 6am to see if there are any updates.
Cool, now we have Jeff and perhaps efficiency as well! :D

Let's stick with going up Genessee. Nice and direct. We just have to make sure we don't race each other up Genessee. That might be fine some other time (I have a nice nasty 16 mile loop up in that direction... turn right after climbing into Del Mar when you reach Del Mar Heights Rd :D ), but not for a day when we're aiming for personal bests on Torrey.

Figure on 10-15 miles for me. A light day (aside from trying to kill myself on Torrey) to get back into the swing of things. Riding solo, I usually do 12, but I'm flexible.

jschen, when I used to live down there, we would do Torry Pines repeats as a regular part of our training. We would do 3 repeats on the inside and then 3 on the outside. It was always a nice place for a good workout.
Also going up Via Capri is a nice pump. I remember us doing it in our 42/23 or 21 more then I care to remember:( I always wanted another gear on that thing
Have you riden Mt. Isreal yet? It's out on Del Dios and will give your legs a nice workout.

sorry I had to take off soo soon, I stopped by Mc D's on Del Dios and made it to work about 8:20 which was good timing. I took Torrey Pines back to the car, I should have just climbing that lil hill on Genesee back to Regends.
The bottom of TP sucked a bit, my legs weren't warmed up after that nice DH, Jason and efficiency broke me off about 75 yards from the bottom. It took a minute for the legs to start working and getting into the groove. I just tried to stay at the same tempo during the entire climb, 10.6-10.8 MPH. I averaged 10.8 on the hill with a time of 8'36" from a dead stop at the bottom.
Thanks for the company on a weekday ride, that was short n sweet (not enough to break a sweat though)
