Hello

I was wondering. What is the best way to store your bike. Is it ok if you hang it upside down by the wheels or not because thats what my friend told me to do. What are the best ways to store it between days. Also, transporting. I'm getting a bike rack, but is the top of the car or back better. Thank you

If a mountain bike can support the weight of riders over 200 pounds flying through the air and over rocks and roots I would say it's safe to say that it can hold the weight of just the bicycle no matter how you hang it.

I've always liked roof racks better just because I have this image of someone rear ending the car and smushing both of my vehicles at the same time.

However, I've read that lots of people forget they have their bikes up top, and then drive into their garage...

There have been a number of posts where bike mechanics and owners have all stated they hang their bikes on a bike hook and never had a problem. I hate to be the one nay sayer, but my neighbor brought her bike to my house with a totally destroyed rear alloy rim. She said her hubby hung the bike by the rear wheel, and, over time, it twisted like a pretzel. However, this was a low end, $80, X-Mart bike. My guess is the wheel was never tensioned by the stock boy who assembled it. I've never heard of a LBS bike having this problem.

If you have disc brakes, I wouldn't hang the bike upside down, you may introduce air into the brake lines from the master cylinder. That being said, I hang my GF's Haro upside down on the ceiling for space saving issues(v-brakes)..boo-yah

I'd say this story is hooey and there's missing information.

I would rather chance my own idiocy then someone else's.

In regard to the bike racks: I have a Yakima roof-rack that is okay. The bike mounts very solidly, so I'm never worried about it falling off or anything. One thing I don't like about roof-racks, however, is that with multiple bikes up top, the wind noise (and subsequent drop in fuel economy) at highway speeds becomes kind of annoying. Having your bikes out back helps with this problem. I don't own an SUV or wagon, so it isn't an option for me, otherwise I might consider it.

My final comment regarding bike racks is that I think they are all overpriced pieces of junk. Yakima, Thule, it doesn't matter... The build quality and sophisitication of the engineering of both brands should fetch less than half of what they actually charge. It's just one of those things you have to suck up and pay for.

not only is it okay to hang your bikes upside down... fox recommends this for their forks as it keeps the seals lubricated.

i keep some of my bikes hanging, some of them in the living room, and in transport on the roof rack. the trunk rack is reserve for when i carry more than two.

+1 for upside down in the garage! Haven't had a problem yet, but I always wonder if you drop it down too hard on the concrete with the rim at an angle would it bend the rim slightly???

What about extreme cold?

Better to store the bike inside the house? (if your garage is not heated).

Thanks guys. I installed some padded hooks in our barn to store it upside down on. As for the bike racks. I'm probably going with the roof rack because I don't want it to get busted up if someone rearends me and I don't park my car in the garage. Thanks again.
