Bicycle Mechanics - Iron Horse Pedals

Hi, I guess I could start out by saying that I am David from Atlanta. I have a little problem on my hands. I have an Iron Horse Warrior 1.3. The pedal has been having problems lately. I was biking along, and the pedal fell off. I took the bike to the shop and got a replacement screw. The guy torqued it in, and today after biking a mile, the pedal started to wiggle again. So, I took my 5/16 allen wrench, and torqued it tight. Well, now you could say, problem solved. But not. I don't want the pedal to fall off again, and what would you people suggest to keep it screwed in tight? I guess I could use some Locktite Blue I have sitting around, but what would you people say?

you could try just putting on some grease first, but ultimately locktite blue (red tube, right?) should solve the problem i'd say.

Thanks for the advice. I just really don't want the screw to fall out, because I would need to go to Dick's Sporting Goods if it fell out. Dicks is 15 miles away. I don't really think they are really too willing to give me another screw. The guy was supposed to charge me for it, but he just said screw it, have the screw.

I'm guessing you're talking about the crank, not the pedal. It's not unusual for left cranks to fall off, and it's usually becasue they were not installed properly to begin with.

You need to grease the square tapered surface of the spindle, grease the threads of the bolt, and grease the underside of the bolt head, then tighten the snot out of it!

Your 5/16" Allen wrench is a bit undersized, and you run a major risk of wrecking the socket in the Allen bolt. You need an 8 mm Allen wrench for this, a nice long one, or one with a cheater pipe. I use an old mountainbike handlebar as a cheater pipe for mine.

Let me guess. Truvativ crank set? Yep... take it back. I deal with these all day. They should replace it with another crank... but who knows if it'll fix it. Haven't had a repeat yet.

Let me guess again, left one? If I had the power, I would recall these pieces of crap... you're not the first and won't be the last.

Sheldon, I've tightened these things down with all my might, and they still fall off... Truvativ screwed up as best I can tell. Did it on some GT's as well.

Edit: Only seen it on the lower-end ones.

I guess that I am just too lazy to take it back. I might just replace the cranks. I will do everything to keep this thing from falling off. Also, I guess I am just going to take Sheldon's advice, what kind of grease? Would white lithium grease work?

It should be a warranty issue so it won't cost you anything. Are they Truvativ?
