I'm looking for a step by step instruction for setting up a 105 front shifter. I haven't had much luck searching. A link would be fine..

Thanks,

ParkTool's repair guide doesn't have much on STI shifters, but it's at the bottom of this page:
http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=117

Basically only shows you how to thread the cables through, though.
What sort of questions do you have about setting up a front STI shifter for 10-speed? Are you using a triple or double crank?

The "setup" is just like any other STI shifter. See: http://wwwparktool.com, or http://www.shimano.com.

My main question is how much cable slack should there be when the FD is in low. Different ammounts of slack greatly change the trimming and overall shifter performance, as I would expect.

Basically there should be no significant slack. Screw the downtube cable anchor's barrel adjuster all the way in then back out one turn. Loosen the cable at the front derailleur and be sure the brifter is in the most "relaxed" position by operating the inner lever three or four times. Then pull all of the slack out of the cable and tighten the fixing bolt.

From that point, use the barrel adjuster to get the shifting to index properly.

Yeah, I didn't think there should be much slack. It was a friends bike and he was dropping the chain off the inside, so I reset the low limit and and took up the cable slack. Then after shifting to the high ring I had to push the lever with undo force to shift back down. Putting the slack back in the cable alleviated the down-shifting problem. I should probably set up the FD from scratch. But hell, it came from the LBS with the slack, who the heck am I to question the LBS. That is why I was looking for the official tome on shifter set-up. Thanks for the info.......

Be sure to flip the small shift lever several times to get all of the cable out of the shifter before attaching the cable to the derailleur.

If your down shift is really hard check the cable routing. The cable should be on the outside of the tab near the pinch bolt when seen from the rear of the bike. I had similar problems the cable routing plus resetting with Parks online guide solved everything.

This is a VERY important point when setting up Shimano front derailleurs and isn't stressed nearly enough in Shimano's instruction sheet. The cable must run over the top of and outside the tab. It must NOT be routed between the tab and the bolt.
