Southern California - GMR closed to cars until July!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

No, you'll be too busy running off the road trying to pet the myriads of peacocks that live in PV.

I don't leave SoCal. It's too skeery out there.

I got a nice comment to my GMR video I had uploaded onto Youtube . .
Ride it before it opens to the public,so you dont get in our way :)
Checked out one of the poster's videos - driving down mountain roads in a maniacal fashion, cigarette in one hand, crossing the yellow line. Granted that he's a rally-inspired driver from Finland . . . I resent that he used the word "our way," as if there's a clear dichotomy between cyclists and the cagers and that it's one or the other . . .

That does suck, it seems to be the prevailing thinking on the canyon roads up here as well.

Should've just responded "by the looks of it, it's going to be closed to motor vehicles for even longer... :p"
As much as i love driving my car on canyon roads, i think i'll only ever be cycling on GMR.

I haven't seen that, but I know Martin.
I think it's a great idea, and there is precedent in other places-- Boston has closed Mem drive for much of every sunday from spring through fall since who knows when. It's open to walkers, bikers, bladers, whoever. http://www.bostoncentral.com/events/nature/p2296.php
One of the things to point out is that there are people besides cyclists who use GMR when it's closed. There are people who blade it (not many, and they're crazy, but they do), as well as hike it, skateboard, luge, whatever. I'd even take evenings after some particular hour on some predictable basis-- in the hot months it's nicer to ride at night than in the day anyway.

Well, on Saturday there was a sign saying 7/9 at 9am, but I haven't checked it out.

I was on GMR / GRR Sunday, saw the same sign. It's the end of an era, for awhile. Until the next time a lane gets washed away or something else that makes the road un-safe for motorized traffic.

I am the "they" to which you refer. Crazyman didn't seem like a proper moniker.

I heard from a very reliable source[ hall of famer Clem] that GMR opened on the 9th to cars and that the CHP has assigned a cruiser to police it once in a while. STAY ON YOUR SIDE OF THE DOUBLE YELLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sent my gf the link to the video that's online and she's trying to get her crazy quebecois friends to come out and skate it. One of them won the race down Mount Royale last year.
