My friend who works for the Dept of Public Works just emailed me to say GMR wont open to cars until July (no exact date given/just July):D Being this is County government, July will surely become September -- and with fire season November!
I've heard if they close it for fire season, its closed to ALL (bikers and hikers as well):(

+1, Maybe a "Skeered of GMR" ride should be in the works...

No reason to be skeered, guys. Just climb up it and take your time down it (it can be dangerous on the descent and we've had two riders now have mishaps on it - so watch out for debris, rocks and sand). But it's a gorgeous ride and if you do it once, you'll want to go up it again. :)

+1 ... Great downhill, since you don't have to worry about cars. I hadn't done it in 10 years, and going down last week brought back great memories ... it was soooooo much fun! If I were still living in SoCal, I'd make this a regular ride.

Psssssh . . . and to think I felt all rushed and skipped work/school to ride it before it was supposed to open to cars . . .
Aweseome, though - more time for me to ride, especially since I'll have hella free time after this week!

Heh. You make it sound so simple. :D
I just switched from a triple to a standard double. I'm pretty much starting over with regards to climbing. I think GMR might be a little beyond my reach right now.
I mean, I can't enjoy the downhill if I don't make it up, right? :D

Mary the only and I mean the only reason I was in front of you last time is cause you uh did 12,000 feet of climbing less than 24 hrs before.. so puhleaseeeeeeeeeeeee.
Thanks, but I gotta go do Turnbull Canyon on my double a few times first before I tackle GMR.
I have never done GMR, I am a bit out of shape I don't know if I can do it. Now that Kris has a new bike I can start riding again.

I lied. I never climbed that. Bob and I drove to Mt. Pinos and had cherry cokes and Pinos Burgers. We then threw water on our jerseys and threw sand at each other before taking pics. It was an elaborate hoax. :p ;)

Chuck Bramwell is doing a GMR Baldy ride this weekend.
Saturday, June 9, 7:30 A.M.
96 Miles with 7,400 Feet of Climbing without the Ski Lift Option
106 Miles with 9,400 Feet of Climbing with Ski Lift Option Rain Cancels
http://www.caltriplecrown.com/centuries/mountbaldy.htm (http://www.caltriplecrown.com/centuries/mountbaldy.htm)
We will start at the Carl's Junior at Imperial Highway and La Palma.
We'll quickly hook up with the Carbon Canyon Century route then head North to the base of the great Glendora Mountain Road where there will be few or no cars as we climb up and follow Glendora Ridge Road to Mt.
Baldy. The Ski Lifts are an option but note that this options adds
2,013 Feet in 4.6 Miles for an Average Gradient of 8.3% with many sections of over 18%!! We'll then take the screamer downhill back down to Foothill and return down Brea Canyon and weave our way back to the start on the same roads we came out on.
This ride will start at Carl's Junior, 5701 E. La Palma Ave., Anaheim, CA 92807-2229 at Imperial Highway and La Palma (TBM 770-E1). We will start at 7:30 A.M. sharp so you should arrive by 7:15 A.M. Take the Imperial Highway exit from the Riverside (91) Freeway and turn North on Imperial Highway (90) to La Palma Ave. Make a Right on La Palma then a quick Left into the parking lot next to the Carl's Junior.
You should bring your riding buddy along with you so you can stick together. We will stop at the Regroup points only for a few minutes.
This will be a great training ride for any of the Double Centuries!!
See you Saturday!!

Nothing wrong with being a noob. ;) GMR is Glendora Mountain Road in Glendora. You can pass the 605 freeway (going East on the 210) and take the Mountain Road exit, I believe, to get up to Sierre Madre and turn right to GMR (which you'd turn left on as it dead ends into Sierre Madre). Or, you can take the 605N-Olive exit, take a right on Huntington and then a left on Encanto Pkwy to park at Encanto Park. Starting from there and going up GMR and back is roughly 32 miles RT. I hope that helps. :)
I am considering a GMR only ride the 16th also...
this would be for anyone who doesnt want to do Baldy...
It would be Encanto PK - Sierra Madre - GMR - back down GMR - Sierra Madre -Encanto PK
If we hit it right we might see the everyoen going to Baldy at the GMR/GRR intersection
Wont know for sure till I get back into town....

You can start off at Encanto Park as m.e. suggested - or if you just want to do the climb, you can start at the base of GMR -
From Pasadena/Glendale/foothills/etc.
210 East
Exit Lone Hill
Left off exit onto Lone Hill
Left on Foothill
Right on Valley Center
Left on Sierra Madre
Immediate right on Glendora Mountain Road
There is a dirt shoulder right before the yellow gate for parking
Put bike over gate
Straddle gate
Climb over gate
Enjoy

I just found out I will be picking up my new bike the night before. I'll need a few rides to get used the Campy shifting and new saddle. And I need to get a proper fit, too. The 44 cm geometry is different form my old 48cm so I don't want to do any hauling on her until I get her all sorted out.
