San Jose to Scotts Valley

I'm flying out to San Jose next week, and going to Scott's Valley. I had a wild idea to do it by bike. Is there a practical route to pedal that is similar in length to 17?

Are there any good bike rental places in San Jose. I saw that Bike Express sells Dahon folders, but I also wanted to consider a decent rental.

All the bike-friendly routes are a little longer and a little bumpier than Hwy 17. The shortest one is probably to take the Los Gatos Creek Trail and Old Santa Cruz Highway up to Summit Road then down Mountain Charlie Road and Glenwood Road to Scotts Valley.
