Do you name your bike(s)?

I've never known anyone who gave their bike a name...just wonderin' how common this practice is.

I have three bikes and the only one with a name is my Fuji Touring bike which I've named La Vaca. Now all I need to do is have the frame repainted to look like a Holstein.

Yes, One is "The mountain bike", another is "The kids mountain bike" then there is "The wifes bike" and there is "The Road Warrior"

I technically named one bike, but only within the past 6 months when I was under the influence of this group. Before that I never did. And I've never named a car either.

But my red Trek is named "Watson", however I only occasionally think of that when I look at it. It is a red Trek and is named after one of the characters from the original Star Trek series. A character who wore a red shirt, beamed down to the planet, and died within a minute. He only got a few seconds on camera.

The others are named "Bridgestone", "Sun recumbent" and "Trek 820 lunch bike."

I don't name inanimate objects, no matter how much I care for them. I suppose I might name a boat due to convention, but not a bike. I go through them so fast, that I really don't want to get attached. :)

I couldn't imagine not naming something I care for and depend on as much as I do my bikes. Do you call your dog "dog"?

The Diego comes to mind, plus Click and Clack, my cruisers, and there was Boomer, my MTB, among others.

Absotively... I think many of you know Maynard my LHT touring bike, and our Cannondale tandem is Big Blue. The others are just "your Trek, or my Trek." I think you'll find most long-distance touring folks name their bikes, and I believe the reason is so when they're out in the middle of BFE they have someone to talk to. I know Maynard, BoB and I had more than one discussion out in West Texas. Call me crazy, I don't care!

Having harshly criticized the practice of naming bikes on this forum, I promptly named my bike, and with an unimaginative name: the Red Rocket. Heck, it's red, it accelerates quickly, it burns up upon re-entry into the atmosphere....

There have been many BF threads on this subject with people often falling with great certainity into either of the camps. However, the appeal of animating with a name a beloved object seems perfectly normal to a weirdo like me. But at least I feel I'm in good company.

One of Britain's favorite composers, Edgar Elgar, named his bike Mr. Phoebus, which he often rode 50 miles a day during the most creative period of his life. John Steinbeck named his "Travels With Charley" vehicle Rocinante in honor of Don Quixote's horse. BB King calls his guitar Louise. Virgin Atlantic has a contest in which you can name individual aircraft (First winner: Jefferson Airplane).

Many of my bikes end up finding a name that sticks. Often the name is given by someone other than myself. Here are a few: Miss Moneypenny, the Duke of Orange, the Stealth Diva, the Bad Boy, the Ave Maria.

Interestingly, I just finished the new John Sandford novel. In it, one of the characters has a dog named "Screw". Took me a couple of chapters to get it. You know, Screw the pooch.

My Dolce Comp is Sweet Thang. Our tandem is Double Trouble. His Fuji I call "mine," but officially it has no name (it's not for me to name).

My car is called Kirby because I tend to rub the curbs when I park. The 4Runner is Nickel because it's been nickel & diming us for years now. Some names just pop into your head unbidden, reflecting the adventures, the feelings, or the personality of whatever vehicle you're operating. Silly? Maybe. But that's just me. :D
