I prefer the Cateye EL320. It's a full 1W headlight with steady and flashing modes. In steady mode it makes a good headlight,in flashing mode it's a really bright blinky.
It doesn't flash, but I use a $10 3-LED madrock headlamp.
I hate bicycle headlights in blinky mode. This mode irritates the hell out of me when I'm riding, so I never use it, and I imagine it inspires motorists to run the irritating blinking lights over, thus sparing everyone on a road a needless migrane. I suggest we all use the regular headlight mode. You can see the road, the motorists can see you, and no one goes into a petit mal seizure.

I use the Cateye TL-LD270 in white. When I see bikes coming on the other side of the road, the blinkies show up much sooner, and stand out from background light.

IIRC,the headlight was around $35,the taillight was $20 online.

Flashing lights draw more attention than steady ones. I really doubt anyone is running over bikers because our lights are annoying.

I like the blinkies in the city - a steady light just does not make an impression against all the others, particularly in the rain. On those occasions where I am driving at night, I really appreciate those cyclists with the blinkies, front and rear.
They are also useful for identifying what you are seeing as red or white LED blinkies almost always indicate a cyclist.
