Our first born is from 1984. The streets around here have been covered with yucky orange thingies from the trees (Euclid Ave). I rode last week and my bike was covered with nasty sticky stuff. Today I talked Gina into doing a ride after work today. She said ok but asked about the orange thingies cause she knows I'd go crazy if her newest bike was to get dirty. I said no problem, I'll just get her old bike out. The 84 Bianchi. I take it out to air up the tires then after a good look, I don't want to get it dirty either. She's so purty! We better find another route!:p

What do you have for your beater/old bike and what condition?

My first roadie was a 2004 Specialized Roubaix Comp. (Yes, I'm a young one.) After a year of riding it with SPD pedals (shudder) and no bottle cages (shudder again; used a CamelBak) I got Vivian. Decided I didn't want my Roubaix anymore and offered her to my dad and to my sister (not Tracy). My dad took her in and promptly neglected her.

Last weekend, Tracy (another sister) took over caring for the Roubaix. I spent six hours between thoroughly cleaning and tuning the bike to get it in like-new condition (except the inevitable scratches), prepping it for Tracy, and fitting her on the bike and teaching her to use clipless pedals. The Roubaix now has two black aluminum bottle cages that hold two pink Polar insulated bottles. And pink bar tape. Look KEO carbon pedals have replaced the SPDs. And a lightly used (and never flatted) set of red Michelin Pro2 Race tires and a set of new Specialized Turbo road tubes (0.6 mm thick, pre-talc'd) now are mounted on the stock Ksyrium Equipes.

Tracy has already done one ride on the bike, and she tells me it rides great. So my first bike has a new life and will be racing the bike segment of triathlons. When reasonably convenient to do so, Tracy will borrow my Spinergy or Rolf Prima wheelset for race days.

Black. What pink saddle is she eyeing? I wonder if my sister would like a pink saddle...

My 1994 Trek 2120 is my main road bike and my beater bike. I have a Trek hybrid that I converted to a drop bar commuter with racks but I rarely use it besides riding to work, and besides it's actually newer (1996). My very first road bike, a high school era gas-pipe Centurion is long gone.

Made by Terry for women. It's the in honor of cancer victims version.

It's under touring on the Terry site. Also have performance but didn't see a pink saddle there.:(

Beanz, you need another bike that doesn't clean up so nice! That will solve your problem!

I have a late 80's Schwinn Supersport that will become either a Fixie or SS whenever I get off my duff and get the right freewheel removal tool...and crank puller...and care enough to do it.

I have an mtb, Trek 8000. Since gas has been so high, I quit driving down to Chino Hills and Claremont Wilderness Park to save gas. I used to ride during the week as hill training. Fun but loading/driving/gas has made it tough. On the weekends, I drive to the trail but get in much longer rides than the mtb.

AND, it is dirty!:D

My "beater" is a 1957 Hercules 3-Speed that was abandoned by it's previous owner (who was a member of the CTC - Cyclist Touring Club of U.K. - he left his "CTC Badge" on the bike!) but it has been telling me it needs new paint (what? I painted you in '82 and you want new paint already!).

So, I may have it powder coated (in Boring British Bike Black, of course!) in a year or two . . . or three. I rode it on the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour in 2006, but this year borrowed a Hercules for the 3-Speed Tour so I could save the money and the hassle of shipping my Herc to WI/MN.

To get back to the Beanz question, the condition is serviceable, i.e. everything works . . . but it looks really rough! The original fenders (mudguards in British) died many years ago, but I just bought some new ones for it recently . . . yet to be fitted.

Rick / OCRR

Okay Beanz,

I hear you! However, keep in mind that this is my bike for errands, i.e. Post Office, Bank, Grocery Store, etc. and I lock it up with my wimpy little lock but no one steals it because:

1. It looks awful
2. It's a 3-Speed
3. No one would really want it.

So, you see, sometimes bad is really good! If I make it all purty, some Evil Vermin might take it!
