Snow Tonight

Winter is coming back.

Snow warning tonight above 8,000 ft. (I am at 6,000 ft, so we wil miss it). Winds will be over 100 mph in the passes. 50 mph around here.

Tonight: Snow showers likely with areas of blowing snow. Some thunder is also possible. Cloudy, with a low around 30. Breezy, with a west wind between 17 and 22 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
This is pretty typical June weather in the Rockies, and it does catch many flatlanders unawares.

I remember years ago on the Ride the Rockies folks from Florida being absolutely totally unprepared for the cold rain, hail and snow in mid June for the RTR (which starts on Father's Day, June 17th).

In fact just 2 years ago they had to bus everyone around Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mtn Park because the snow closed Trail Ridge Road (at 12,000 ft+)

So, if you are a flatlander, please come PREPARED - or prepare to be freezing. On the other hand, towns like Montrose and Grand Junction can be over 100F.

I was in Twin Lakes, Leadville, and Buena Vista last June. A couple of the nights were in the 30s. But the air felt wonderful. I loved it up there.

Got some last night in Reno, too. I took the dog out about 10 and the rain (even that's unusual this time of year) was just turning to snow. The whole garden is in, tomatoes, peppers, basil, cantaloupe, but I don't remember where I put the row covers and I just decided screw it, it'll freeze or it won't. My thermometer says it only got down to 38, so should be OK. But it cleared up today, so it might plummet into the 20s. Living in the mountains is always a challenge.

But, most of our glaciers are going or gone.

We camped at about 10,000 feet near Buena Vista in August a few years back. When we got up in the morning, there was a skim of ice on dog water bowls left out over night. I am a believer in extreme mountain weather at any time.

No snow here, but it's rained 8 of the last 9 days.

Sounds like Global Colding to me.

I lived for 4 yrs. in Glenwood Springs. On May 10th, '79 I was to head up to Sweetwater with my fellow whitewater raft guides, for a 3-day camping & training workshop. I woke up that morning to snow, inches of snow, and cold. We put off the trip, I called friends in Texas & was moved by the end of June. I'd had my limit.

'Preciate the warning to the visitors; I knew of many who were caught unawares by snow on July 4th on top of Mt. Sopris.

Re the title of the thread - two words - Laramie, Wyoming. That's all.

High temp today in Seattle was 58ish. Snow was predicted in the Cascades at the 4,000 foot level. Rainier tops out at over 14,000 - break out the skis.

When I want snow, I buy a post card.

According to the USGS there are 6 major volcanoes in Costa Rica. How close to one of them are you? ;)

Strangely, I thrive on changes in weather and love the different seasons. I would find life in a "same" climate totally boring. I have so many options - cross country skiing, snow shoeing, snow hiking, fall colors.

Nice day today, temp suppose to hit 93 but the wind is blowing with gusts to 30 + MPH. I'll ride but will limit around the neighborhood for now.

thanks for the 'heads up'... I will be in Denver a week from today--and Ride the Rockies starts over the weekend...with Rabbit Ears Pass the first day, and Independence Pass on Thursday... with a little luck, we can get through there without snow :)

Rabbit ears isn't so bad, it is only about 9,500 feet. But I think you will find Independence an interesting challenge.
