Commuting - Aggressive Tires

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I am riding along in the bike lane, approaching a red light where there are cars lined up. I pull up next to a shiny new Mini Cooper as I stop at the light, and PING!. My front tire hits a piece of loose gravel, and it shoots out like a bullet from under the tire and hits this guy's door. I am quite sure it at least chipped his paint, if it didn't leave a small dent. He looks over at me with a PISSED OFF look on his face. I just shrug, and look behind me and frown, hoping he'll think it came from that direction.

Aww man, that's messed up but funny. I love my car as much(probably more) than my bike. That's why I never drive it.
That's happened to me a few times. I ignore it, because I've also been pegged by little rocks as cars go by. And they never stop to see if I'm ok or if it chipped the paint on my bike.
It's simply a casualty of modern life. Shiny things don't stay shiny forever.

The situation you describe is about the only one where a driver might realize the rock came from your bike. Just luck of the draw that you got a driver who cared. Our bike lanes contain so much debris & rocks that this is a frequent occurence but usually the car is overtaking and not one in 1,000 drivers will associate the hit with the bicycle they just passed.

happens to me all the time...I commute on my mountain bike. I have knobbies on it because theres some trails I hit on the way to work...when I ride on the road sometimes rocks the size of quarters fly across the street when I hit them. hehe.

I don't think you even need knobbies, if you hit the rock just right.

Yeah, I have slicks. They are made with Kevlar, they can pinch a mean pebble.

My road bike slings rocks way better than my MTB.
Happens to me all the time in the alleyways especially, but on the roads too. I figure it's a way to get back at the cars that fling rocks at me :)

The cars shouldn't dish it out if they can't take it :)
