OK, this is something that I heard from a guy who heard from a guy, etc., but I couldn't find anything about it on line.

Anyway, I've heard that Starbucks is going to be the new title sponsor of the Discovery Channel Team.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Well,
Who knows if the rumor is true? But, it makes actually a lot of sense. Starbucks is both expanding into Europe and is a non-cycling specific product that for whatever reasons its shops resonate as stopping points for weekend warrior cyclists. It offers them to advertise to multiple demographic markets.

In addition, Starbucks is run by a top-down CEO/Founder who can justify this advertising (I am still not convinced the returns on cycling sponsorship are beneficial except for cycling specific companies) compared to some random CEO of most publicly traded companies. Get ready for the Green / Brown / and Black color combination however. Check that, keep it green and black.

Wouldn't that be a conflict of interests with TD's brand of coffee?

+1 It would make sense if they would like to expand in europe. Very good point.

The OCP's would love it. They can take their $7k+ bike, put it on the roof of their car, park a couple blocks from the Starbucks and then ride their bikes to Starbucks in full Starbucks kit!

Looks like Starbucks needs to make sure that as part of the sponsorship free caramel latte's and scones are not part of the deal.

Sure, a few could use a diet, but I gotta give them props for going out and doing what they love. That's better than 95% of most other americans.

They used to sponsor either a men's elite team or a men's masters team so it wouldn't be a stretch to see them move up to the pro ranks. For a while they rode under the DoubleShot name which is one of Starbuck's pre-made canned coffee beverages.

Odd, you never see Freds on Serottas around here (or IFs or Sevens and I'm in their 'hood). Freds seem to focus on what the pros ride. Like those snaaazy $7K S-Works Tarmacs with Zipps. Back to the topic, I'm amazed that any American company is going to put that kind of coin into pro cycling right now, so if it's true that's a helluva gesture by Starbucks. I still think their coffee sucks.

I agree that Starbucks may over-roast their coffee to over compensate for lesser quality beans. But, prior to Starbucks people literally would stop at a McDonalds for coffee in the morning. I remember as a kid in Vermont traveling to hockey, all the parents would literally buy and drink McD's coffee.

My biggest complaint with Starbucks is the fact that people who order what are essentially 700 calorie milkshakes tell me they like coffee. No - unless you order a drip coffee, Americano or Expresso, you do not like coffee. You like milkshakes.

92degrees
06-07-07, 02:16 PM
Oh, McD and DD don't know anything about coffee (or my cycling) either. There are people that roasted and ground beans and made their coffee in a french press long before Starbucks appeared (x4) in every town, tho.

I know this was said in an attempt at humor, but I think it's a little ironic that out of shape people get made fun of for not exercising, but then once they start exercising, they're made fun of because they're not skinny yet...

I must agree with kensuf:
