How often do Pro/Elite riders go down hard enough to die in a race? i.e. when was the last pro to die in a race (and it not be related to doping or vehicle traffic, just other riders/race course)
I know it's kind of morbid but i think about these things when descending canyons at 40 mph.

Fabio Casartelli died while descending the Col de Portet d'Aspet in the 1995 TdF. i think he's the most recent to die during a race.

Man, there's a Wikipedia for everything (some of these are doping-suspicious though)

Tommy Simpson died on an amphetamine overdose leading to cardiac arrest while climbing, they had to pry the bars out of his dead hands.

wow, that's an interesting list. it would absolutely suck to die by drowning during a rest day in the TdF, as Adolphe Heliére did.

You'll get this bike when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

I remember when Nicole Reinhart died back in 2000. Very sad, only 24 years old. I actually rode through that area the day before yesterday.

Kivilev's crash was sort of freakish, not really a hard crash. The fact that it should have been very survivable, lead to mandatory helmets in the Pro peleton.

Ed Peters? (Check me on the first name there.) He was Master's National champ.
Ran off the road (or was forced off) and hit a tree in a race in Florence KY in 1990?. Died instantly.
I was announcing at that race, part of the Blue Ash Dash weekend in Cincy. It was horrible.
The Nicole Reinhart story was tragic.

The -See Related- has a wiki about the curse of the Rainbow Jersey, which was interesting in its own rite.

Every year, many amateurs die in a races around the world. Seems like CyclingNews.com has a story every couple months. A lot of times it is in training, but a fair share happen in races.

The 2004 World Road Champion Óscar Freire was on good form throughout the spring, but developed a saddle sore mid-season that ended his hopes for a second consecutive title on home turf in Spain.
Man, that had to be SOME saddle sore.

The curse idea seems pretty weak. Picking and choosing recent problems. Note they include one from the Madison yet ignoire at least a half dozen other track diciplines. Also about half of the 'curse' is that recent winners have been busted for doping. Hardly a curse.
