Cyclocomputer freak out

We have 2 computers on the bike - a Cateye wireless on the front & a Cateye wired one with cadence on the rear.

A couple of weeks ago we were tucking down a big hill near home (road up to NCAR). Once we slowed down, we both checked our Max speeds.

The wirless showed 65+ mph (which I don't believe) and the wired one showed 53.5 mph (which sounds about right). In all other circumstances the two agree within a few percent.

I could understand a computer missing pulses (showing a slower speed) but I have no idea how it could pick up pulses (showing a higher speed). This is the second time this happened in 5 or so years (not a big deal) - both times when going over 50 mph but in different areas.

Any idea how this could happen?

I thought about that but why did this happen in two differerent locations & only at high speed?

This is not really a big issue, I was just curious.

Here is my little test method to see if your computer is prone to interference.
Take your cell phone turn it on and hold it next to your computer and see if it goes crazy.
One of my computers starts reading speeds of 70 mph+ the only computer that has no interference or problems of any kind is my VDO C3 DS

Intermittent problems are difficult to troubleshoot.

If it was not interference maybe your transmitter hiccuped. Or maybe your receiver hiccuped. Maybe it was the processor. Unfortunately, chances are you won't find out. In some ways it would be good if it got worse. Kind of like an episode of "House". Make it sicker to give you a better idea of what is wrong :). I think someone a year ago or so was talking about how they went through a couple wireless units. I don't remember if the outcome was bad design, bad units or inconclusive. Nor do I remember what make they were.

I think wireless units are great but things like this are why I stay with wired networks whenever possible.

Have heard of units acting up passing under hi-tension wires, radar (police or military), also proximity of another bike with wireless 'puter.
Ditto on why we prefer a wired unit.

Wireless computers do all sorts of things wrong.

A few years back I borrowed a friends Spinnergy front wheel to try in the tandem. For some reason the computer, would only "read" above a certain speed. Once the speed dropped again it would turn off. It showed my 30 mile ride and only about a 10 mile ride... but boy did we have a fast average. : )
