I don't know about you, but for me it can be convenient to avoid locking and unlocking my bike. If my bike is loaded down with stuff, my brain is occupied with other concerns, and i seem to have forgotten where in all of my belongings the keys have gotten to, i'd just as soon not lock up 'til I go home.

And yes, that was my actual situation today at the grocery store but I sucked it up and went to find the keys because I didn't want to bring the bike into the grocery store.
Have you had any problems using a convenient drive up window on your bike?
Does the grocery store in question have a drive up window for the convenience of motorists but refused you service? Certainly you are not considering refusal to allow bicycles inside the store the same as a refusal to serve a customer at a drive up window, are you?

Nope.

Does the grocery store in question have a drive up window for the convenience of motorists but refused you service?

ummm.... no, no drive through.

Certainly you are not considering refusal to allow bicycles inside the store the same as a refusal to serve a customer at a drive up window, are you?

I don't know if you noticed, but the part of my post you quoted said that I didn't want to bring my bike into the store. Perhaps you thought I was complaining that the store didn't make me want to bring my bike in the store?

Actually, I couldn't figure out what you were complaining about as far as parking your bike at the grocery store or what service you expected from the store management that they failed to provide.

Well the issue with the drive-throughs is that they usually have longer hours than the lobby. This is true at restaurants and banks. My pharmacy has only drive-thru service on Saturdays; the lobby isn't open at all.

Since there is no convincing reason to deny drive-up service to cyclists, it's legitiamate for us to complain when establishments ban us from the convenience of longer hours.

If I want a supersize chickenlike Mcgreaseball at 2:00 AM, by God I should have it, just like any other healthy American.

These are my experiences at local banks:

Bank of Colorado - At the main office and one branch I have ridden my bike through the drive through and gotten cheery service. At both of these locations I have also brought my bike into the lobby and propped it up behind the desk customers use to sign their checks, etc., numerous times and no one has ever said anything.

American National Bank - I have used the drive though on bike and foot with no problems. I have not tried to bring my bike inside yet.

US Bank - I always bring my bike in, stand in line with it, and lean it against the teller window while my transaction is taken care of. No problems.

One time in the past I took my bike onto Safeway grocery store to pick up a few things. I got cheery smiles and jokes from the cashier. I haven't had to do that again though. At the Albertson's grocery store down the block I have not taken my bike in but I have seen another guy in there rolling his road bike around with him, so I may have to give it a try. I shop there frequently and many of the clerks know my name.

A couple of years ago my bf and I were out for a long ride on a hot day and we were very hungry. We decided to stop at a Pancheros mexican fast food place and get a burrito to eat in some shady spot. When I went in I spotted a table with space behind it so I asked if we could bring our road bikes in for a bit while we ate. The manager came out and said us and our bike were welcome here anytime. We haven't had to ask to bring our bikes in since, but we do like to eat there, good service, good food.

A trendy brew pub in town wouldn't let us keep our bike with us out on their patio, so we have never gone back. Another brew pub down the street (walking distance for us) has bike racks outside thier patio that are usually full.

On the other hand, now I realize that Cerewa wasnot complaining at all but just giving a reason why some bicyclists might prefer to bring a bike inside a business establishment, rather than park outside. I find that a different issue than refusal to serve at the drive-in window when there is no other option like late at night.

It seems others on BF are whining/complaining about such drive-in refusal policies that appear to be more urban legend than fact.

And please be sure to inform everybody if and when YOU are ever not allowed to exercise that God-given right to be served at the drive-in window when the lobby is closed.

I have never been allowed to ride my bike through the drive-through at a fast food restaurant, and I have tried several times. I e-mailed corporate offices of McD's and Wendy's a few years ago. They both informed me that their policy is not to serve cyclists or pedestrians at their drive-throughs, and they do not anticipate changing that policy.

I gave up trying several years ago. Screw 'em!

It always tickles me that you whine about these kinds of threads, then post on them more than anybody else.

I've never had a problem biking through the drive-through at my bank, but I have had problems with fast food restaurants.

NEVER, have I had any problems with a drive up window, except in my truck, it sets too high.

No problem on the bike, the Miata's too low to be able to reach the vacuum tube thing though.
However, the bank is air-conditioned, I go inside. When someone else is footing the bill, AC is too fine of an invention to let go to waste on a hot day.
