Those other guys are too healthy for me  0

49 years old...at LEAST 20 lbs overweight. I'm back on my beloved road bike after 15 years.
I used to ride a Cannondale at least 30-35 miles every day. Got married, got lazy, got fat.

A few days ago, I wandered into a LBS and fell in love with a Specialized Sequoia Elite. Plunked 1K on the counter and headed home to dream about my old body.
So far, I've manged to do about 10 miles between 2 nights of riding, while sustaining a 65% heart rate. (doctor's suggestion after a routine stress test).
I feel born again.

Sorry if I babbled.

Nice to meet all of you.

I am younger than you by a year and I have not been run off yet... With any kind of luck you will manage to become 50 eventually...

You will enjoy it. I can't imagine a better group to share stories with. Of course there's really only three people here, each with several different alter egos.

Very different. Welcome aboard anyway, 49 is definitely close enough for this bunch.

You may actually be 50, as some of us came back a year younger after returning from the "mother ship". Just ask DG or TWL--they can probably explain it better!

We used to have a cop named Webb Diego who checked IDs at the door, but he was run off, so you're safely in. Even if you didn't bring pie.

Heck yes you can join. How much junk mail have you been getting from AARP? That should quaify you.

You're about 50 legally. I think the group does waive that. That's clever of you to join early. I joined in my mid 50's. Welcome to the group and BF.

Do you have aches and pains (arthritis is preferable)?

Do you like to take mallets and rub your saddles?

Do you like to eat pie?

Does it take you 5 years to find a proper fitting bike?

Do you think "centuries" are best measured in "cent"imeters?

Do you remember when Italian bicycles were made in Italy?

Do you remember doo wop?

If you've answered "yes" to anyone of those questions, you may join this forum

Anthony, you could ride your bike around Detroit at night time for a bit. That will age you by 12 months, if you live to talk about the rides.

I am the 50+ treasurer and can make it official. Just send me the early joining fee of $2500 and we'll be glad to have you participate as a full fledged member. Although I'm not sure if anyone here has quite sustained that status just yet but has qualified in other ways.........As DG has pointed out we can be bribed with pie and also words of encouragement are generally very well accepted here as well.

NO! You must have accumulated the required number of age credits, absolutely no exceptions.

Fortunately for you, however, I have some extra age credits that I'm willing to sell. Actually, I may have some from the 60's that I don't even remember so I'll never miss them.

This is relavent: todays Dilbert cartoon.

Dilbert: "Happy Birthday. What's it feel like to be 50?
Old Guy: "It's great! I've never felt better in my entire life."
Dilbert: "So it's sort of a delusional thing?"
Old Guy: "Yes. Luckily."

End of stroy.

"Those other guys are too healthy for me"

What makes you think we're not healthY?
Well, if you're forty-nine you're already being recruited by AARP, so that's close enough for this outfit. Welcome. Ride safe.

I'm glad to see this thread. I've been shy here, as I am merely 'pushing 50.'
I also have a Sequoia, though not a new one. It came as part of a screaming deal on a used Burley tandem; the price was so right, we figured 'why not?' I can hardly ride it; it feels like I'm a little out of control on a race horse.

Both the stoker seat on the tandem and the sequoia are already proudly sporting new Brooks saddles.

about my old body.

You are welcome, but you must never say something like "old body" again.

You see, I am 18 years older then you, and I like to think of my body as "young."

But when some young whippersnapper such as you starts talking about an "old body," then I have to think, if 49 yo is an "old body" what am I walking around in? So it gets me depressed. In order to avoid my depression, start thinking about your body as "young." Besides, it will make you feel better about yourself!:D
