The Planet Ultra Event Production Team is super excited about the upcoming inaugural HOODOO 500 ultra-marathon bicycle race!
Who: Solo, Tandem and Team Divisions (and their dedicated crews)
What: 512 miles with about 30,000’ of climbing in 48 hours or less
When: September 15-17, 2007
Where: St. George, Utah
Why: To challenge yourself on the finest 500-mile course on the Planet
Destined to become the best ultra race ever, the Hoodoo 500 route passes through or around three National Parks: Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef; three National Monuments: Pipe Springs, Grand Staircase-Escalante and Cedar Breaks; and several Utah State Parks including Anasazi, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Kodachrome and Snow Canyon; and meanders in and out of the Dixie National Forest. The scenery varies from majestic cliffs and striking red rock hoodoos to aspen and pine forests and high mountain meadows.
It’s a loop course on wonderful, well-maintained, quiet roads with no traffic and breath-taking scenery. All the best of Utah’s Color Country!
Team Racers may choose their own strategies. There are few restrictions on when or how often riders may exchange. A team may have one, two, three or four racers on the course at the same time, in a team paceline (although competing teams may not draft each other). It’s a ton of fun!
All HOODOO 500 Official Finishers receive a medal at the finish line, and the exclusive finisher’s jersey which will be shipped after the race.
When the race is over, everyone will enjoy the Post-Race Banquet - a buffet brunch, fun awards and sharing of newly created, but long-lasting memories of the awesome Hoodoo 500 experience!
Check it out at http://www.Hoodoo500.com
Any solo entrant on this forum who sends in their entry post-marked no later than June 20th may take $25 off the entry fee. Relay teams can take a $50 discount.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's on Extort's list. Does he get a refund if he's already signed up? :)
I wish I could plan vacations at will. This sounds like a great four person team ride.

Does this race count as a RAAM qualifier? I would be so down for doing this race if I had the support and $$$. Plus it would be a nice way to spend my birthday... :) on the bike.

No, the Hoodoo 500 is not a UMCA Sanctioned RAAM Qualifier. But that decision is entirely up to the UMCA; which, at this point, has denied our request. The UMCA currently has in place a set of guidelines with respect to sanctioning RAAM Qualifiers that basically prevents competition against the current RAAM qualifier events. (We believe that these guidelines are unlawful, and in violation of Federal antitrust laws).
Notwithstanding, the UMCA's policies with respect to a rider qualifying for RAAM include Rule #7, which states: "Based on a rider's cycling resume, the RAAM director may issue an invitation to compete in RAAM."
In October 2006, we discussed the issue with RAAM Race Director, Jim Pitre. He confirmed that the RAAM Race Director has the prerogative to extend an invitation to any rider who proves worthy of RAAM. Mr. Pitre stated that if a solo racer does well at the Hoodoo 500 and personally requests entry into RAAM, they would be extended an invitation to compete in RAAM. We recently learned that Terry Zmrhal has been appointed RAAM Race Director for 2007. We trust that Mr. Zmrhal would also have the authority to make the ultimate decision as to which solo racers are invited to RAAM.
Relay Team Racers do not have to qualify for RAAM.
If sanctioning by the UMCA is important to you, please feel free to let your feelings be known to the UMCA by contacting them directly.

Maybe... I was thinking solo, though. We could keep each other company, though, at least for 15 minutes!
BTW, have you read the rules?
I. Riders or crew may not be naked outside of their support vehicle for any reason without coverings or curtains. Please use discretion when urinating in public.
What fun is that? :D
Hmmm... I wonder if those blue shorts from ESD would be DNF'd?

It doesn't say the support vehicle can't be a top down convertible. ;) Or maybe it does... I didn't read the rules.
Oh, and there's the matter of defining nakedness. Wear some socks. :p

Have you checked out the team rules?
This is interesting...
C. There are no requirements as to how much time or how many miles each team member may ride.
D. One, and up to all, of a team’s registered riders may cycle at any time. Drafting is permitted within the same team, but not between rival teams. Exception: Only one rider may start the race. There are no exchanges or additions until riders join their support vehicles at the first support zone.
A quesiton for PlanetU: Do the non-riding riders have to stay with the follow vehicle?

The entrance fee structure is a bit of a deterrent for/bias against relay teams. I guess that means we all just ride solo then, right? :p

Other races of this same type, including the one starting in Santa Clarita in October, are WAY MORE EXPENSIVE than the Hoodoo!
