View Full Version : Help with Finding a Bike Crate
My work is taking me out to Missoula in about a month. I am planning on staying an extra 7-10 days to do some self-contained touring. My question concerns crating the bicycle. I seem to recall seeing one person on an organized tour a few years ago bring a special type of crate that was in a trapezoid shape of some sort in which he could put his V-REX into the entire crate, seat and all. Does such a thing exist, or am I delusional? If the former, what's its name and URL?
Thanks in advance for your time and attention to this matter.

You gotta be kidding on those Hostel Shoppe crates... a cardboard box for $3xx? Come one!
Okay, build your own crate. Get a supply of 1/8" plywood (nice and light) and 1x2 and 2x2 pine, hemlock, or even cedar stock from Home Depot. Search the internet for building crates and beg your local neighborhood woodcrafter to rip the plwood sheets to the size you need. Design the crate around your bike. See if anything can be removed/moved to make the crate smaller or easier to handle. Also check with the airlines and ask about the size and weight limitations or the fees for oversized 'luggage'.
