Road Cycling - 26 * 1 3/8 tire size

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have this old bike which I have been riding for the past few summers. The bike is nearly 25 years old. It has actually held up fairly well, as I ride it almost 80 miles a week. Anyways, the rear tire has worn thin to the point where you can see the threads. I know that it is unsafe to ride until I buy a new tire for the back. The only problem is that the size of the worn out tire reads on the side "26 x 1 3/8". I tried going online to various bike shops, and none of them have that size. I think they don't make them in that size anymore. Can I get away with buying a diffrent size, or will that not work?
It's still a very common size. You might even be able to get it at K-Mart or the other mart. Wal-Mart. Or, of course, your local LBS. Even Sears might have them.
You didn't mention the bike brand. If it's a Schwinn the 26x1 3/8 is different than other tires of the same size, and you'll have to go to the LBS for that.
