Triathlon - Hello, I am a Tri noob and I have a question.....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am getting ready for my first tri this fall (going to be participating in the local summer splash and dashes to get ready). I am curious about how you work the eyeglass problem if your swim ends up at a different place than when you started? Do you leave your glasses at the bike? If so, how do you drive to the start. Do you wear your glasses? If so how do you wear your goggles? Are there any products that let you carry your glasses in a bag or something while you swim?

Do you have a spare pair? Maybe leave your good glasses with your bike and wear the spares to the swim start?

At the moment I do not have a spare pair. That being said it is about time I got a new pair. I have until October. It is supposedly one of the toughest Tri's in Arizona (which is why I am going to do the splash and dashes first to prepare as the bike portion will not be a problem.). I am going for the Olympic distance as opposed to the half ironman figuring it would be better to start small.

Curious about the swim: Are you swimming across a lake?

Curious about the swim: Are you swimming across a lake?

Taking off from a fishing platform near a marina, swimming along a large set of cliffs (on a lake, Saguaro lake, Az to be exact) then making a left turn into an official swimming cove (after a 1500m-2000m swim depending on your choice of distances) you run up the beach to T1. Next comes a hilly 27-56 mile bike course followed by a 6-12 mile trail run through the hills. I have swam in the Swimming cove before and have rowboated around the cliffs. The bike course I know very well. The running trails I don't know but they are 20 minutes from my house and there is lots of time and the website gives a good satellite map.

I know I won't be breaking any records on this one but I think with improving my swimming technique and running over the next 3.5 months it should be doable (I hope!).

I also wear glasses and am fairly "blind" without them. I hate walking to the swim start without them on but I have sort of solved the problem by buying prescription swim goggles.

Get contacts. Even if you don't want to wear them everyday they are a lot more convinent for an event like what you are doing. Just buy a few pairs and keep them on hand.

How about getting swim goggles with your prescription?

Problem is they don't make contacts for my prescription anymore. (I have pretty sever nearsighted ness combined with astigmatism in one eye).

That would be a good option. I think I will look into that. My prescription usually ends up being pretty expensive though so I will have to see if they can do it.

Just ordered a pair of Aquagoggles. They can't correct the astigmatism in my left eye but they do get my right. I figure the drive back to the start is not too long and I should be able to drive it slow early in the morning. Other option would be to leave my glasses in the car and quickly stop to get my glasses as I zoomed by the parking lot during the bike segment.
