Southern California - I'm going to be in So Cal this weekend...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Heather and I are taking a last min road trip to visit some friends in the North Hollywood area, out the door in an hour or two!

Three quick questions:

1) Whats the best mtn bike trail to hit up if I only have an hour or two in the morning?
2) Who does the best Sunday brunch in the North Hollywood Park neighbor hood?
3) Anyone want to join us? *

* I'm not sure what our friends have planned or what my time frame is. I'll edit this thread with more info soon...

Keep us informed... depending on when exactly you might be meeting up with SoCal folk, I'd love to be there.

If you don't mind some fireroad, take the 101 to Reseda exit, go south to the end of the road and park below the pay area. Go up the road to the top, this is Dirt Mulholland, turn right for about 1/4 mile and go through the gate on your left. You are now in the Topanga State park and there are roads and some singletrack as far as you want to go. You can probably meet some other riders there and ask about the trails.
There are many areas around here, but this is a good start.

Hey Joe, you'll be about a 30 min drive from Malibu Creek State Park, which has some awesome scenery including the filming site of M*A*S*H. Mostly fire roads, but great riding and plenty of miles of it.

I can't join, although I am tempted to try a mtb ride to see if the source of my knee problems is the fit of my roadie. That, and I promised my wife I'd sell the mtb if I wasn't using it.

I go hiking up there from time to time and was wondering about that first hill.
1) Is it a pia to climb as a warm-up?
2) Is it hard to control when coming down to end the ride?

Malibu Creek State Park sounds great, I watched M*A*S*H every week growing up!

Brian, it's a bit of a pain, but I just go slow on the road section, even tacking a little, and then when I get to the dirt, I just go straight up. It's easier to come down than it looks. There is also a little singletrack you can take up from the beginning of the dirt to Mulholland. If you crave a tough warm-up, start lower at Caballero Canyon, across from the entrance to Braemar Golf.

Awesome, there's still a rusted up Jeep at the site, which I think is about 5 miles into the park. Shortly after that you have the option of going up Bulldog Canyon, a 5 mile climb with I think around 1500 feet of elevation gain!

Big John, thanks. I might give that a try if I don't sell the mtb.

Joe, http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=614 has the info you need to get there, including a map. Basically you want to go west on Highway 101 until Las Virgenes. Turn left (south) on Las Virgenes and go a few miles until you see Mulholland. The entrance to the park is just past Mulholland on the right hand side. I have not been in the park but it all should be pretty obvious once there.

+ 1 on both of Bill's suggestions. Also, Joe, if you just want some good grub, try Patti's in Toluca Lake - great omelettes. I wish could meet the both of you, quite honestly. Please post where you are going for brunch, and if I can stop by, I will. Have a safe trip out here. :)

Smokehouse in Toluca Lake has an amazing Sunday brunch. Place has been around forever and it's a favorite. Across from Warner Brothers and next to Universal (*sniff, my now-former home)

Never ridden Malibu Creek State Park. But in the vicinity, is Big Sycamore Cyn in Pt Mugu State Park. Some great trails in there - a bit of fire road, singletrack, clilmbing, and ocean views. One of my So Cal favorites.

Oh, forgot to tell you they now charge a parking fee at Malibu Creek. I never had to, because I used to live 1/4 mile from a trailheader that leads to the park. If you want to use that, it's free parking in a residential zone (1/4 mile section with no house fronts so nobody cares who parks there... great for parties). It will add about 4 miles round trip to your ride.

If you're interested in that, take the 101 west to Liberty Canyon, left on Liberty Canyon. Park about 1/2 mile down just before Revere Way. Ride the remaining 1/4 mile down Liberty Canyon to a trail head at the end of the street (before it turns left). Ride the trail head through the canyon until you get to a paved access road which leads to Mulholland. Turn left on Mulholland for about 1/2 mile where you will see a side entrance to the park on the right (just before Las Virgenes).

Oh, and the above comment on Sycamore Canyon is another nice ride. A little longer ride to get there, but beautiful. We're spoiled to live around here.

Thanks for making this thread. It made me start searching for some stuff related to the park. Not only did I find the history of the dam in the park, but about another dam nearby as well as the reason railroads don't go through Malibu! Some cool history, so my wife and I will be visiting a museum and hiking around there today.
