Weight loss was my biggest reason for starting exercising. With a stomach getting out of control, I remarked to a coworker one day that I could breathe, or I could tie my shoes, but I could not breathe and tie my shoes at the same time. Another coworker (who was himself hefty) said he had had this problem for years, and referred to it as snorkeling. Before he bent over to tie his shoe, he took a deep breath, just as you would before diving underwater.

30 pounds later, I have no problem breathing while I tie shoes. So I'll ask my fellow 50+ers, can you breathe while you tie (or snap, or velcro, etc) your shoes, or do you snorkel?

That's a mighty personal question you're asking!

The answer is no, no I don't snorkel.

And if you get me to thinking about whether I am inhaling, exhaling, or even breathing when I tie my shoes, well, I just might forget to tie my shoes at all.

This is the type of question that makes me wish for the days of Diego Webb, whom I sure would have a thing or two to say about "snorkeling."

I DO very much KNOW what you mean, YES , I snorkled, good way to descibe it. At 368 I snorkled plenty. Conscious efforts to do routine tasks. Once I got below 280, I notice the biggest single improvement. Among other things, I got my old walk back. At 240'ish these days,I feel normal, look fat. At least I have lateral movement. I missed not having that too.

No, and I can actually bend over from a standing position and retie them in a pinch.

Actually, I usually don't untie my shoes. I just take a deep breathe, hold it, and bend over far enough to slip them on with a shoe horn. Unfortunately this method doesn't work with high top shoes or boots. :)

Snorkel?

Hell, I can't type. I can't file. I can't even answer the phone.

20 points to the first person who knows what the above is a reference to.

I'm assuming you mean a reference besides the obvious one to DG.

I should have figured there was a Playboy angle to the solution.

I only snorkel at 10,000 feet, where bending over to tie my shoe feels like a 20 mile ride.
How do you beastly mountain people do it?
