Hi; Am toying with going car free this fall. My only hitch is that I have to drive 90 miles north each weekend to visit my daughters. Is anyone aware of a national car rental company who has something akin to frequent flyer miles? What I am thinking is something like rent 4 weekends and get the next one free. I have run some rough numbers and it seems like a rental would be cheaper than having a car in the driveway which I only use on weekends.

Thanks.

Have you heard of flex car? I don't think that they are in your area yet, but perhaps something similar exists.

Here is the link:

Probably would be cheaper once you figured in insurance.. and maintenance on the car. THat is if you have the car paid off. Don't forget that you will have to buy the added insurance for the rental since you don't own a car anymore so that is about another $5-10 a day. So if you figure $30 to rent the car unlimited mileage.. plus Another $10 for taxes and insurance. You are looking around $320 a month.. That's a tough call which is cheaper.. if still paying for the car definately cheaper to rent one on the weekends, but if it is paid off might not save you much money.

I will still have one car in the household, so insurance is not an issue. I have written the local alternative transportation group (gomaine.org) to see what their thoughts are on the lexcar idea.

Thanks.

I went carfree in Feb--although my wife still has her car. We occasionally rent an Enterprise, since they are convienient to my house. But we've only done that once since I went carfree and that was when we had the other car in the shop and we both had to attend a meeting in a city about 100 miles away.

It's definately cheaper than owning, maintaining, licensing, and insuring another vehicle.

A similar service exists in Boston, which is a little closer, but probably doesn't help. http://www.zipcar.com/

I might be cheaper to get a junker and min. insurance, if you can do your own maintaince.
