Here is the situation: I now work at a bike shop and therefore get crazy good prices on pretty much everything I buy. The item that I have been waiting for a long time to purchase is a new wheelset. Here is the dilemna:

I ride an 07 CAAD9 which is in the process of being upgraded component wise (either campy or sram...not sure). It has shimano 561 wheelset which I enjoy and plan to keep as my commuter wheels. I also have an open pro laced to a PT pro which I use for training and racing. I will be ordering one of those new Pedal Force ZX3 frames through the groupbuy so I will also need a set of wheels for that. My plan as of now is to sell the PT pro and open pro on ebay and get as much as I can for that. Basically I am trying to decide on two wheelsets to get with my 561's being a commuter wheel/backup wheelset. I really like the reynolds alta race wheelset that is still available here and there on some sites online. Then again, for just a bit more I can get any of Easton's top wheelsets. I can also get a good deal on mavic cosmic carbones and purchase their 2year replacement policy.

Here are my major desires: I would prefer silver rims. I need something that is PT compatible. I prefer to stay away from CF unless it is the mavics as they offer the crash replacement super cheap for employees. I am a light rider at 69kg but I still prefer bombproof wheels just for insurance. These will be raced on, trained on, and ridden hard on.

Any advice is appreciated!

I've seen American Classic 420's laced up to PT hubs... Bontrager also has some nice powertap wheels.

Ya I should have mentioned that Bontrager is one of the few companies I don't have access to. AM420's are nice...I should consider those. I am having a hard time not jumping on a set of those reynolds alta races while they last. I just have to decide if I am going to strip the 105 off my bike in favor of campy or sram...I am leaning towards sram but campy is sexy!

You're going to sell your powertap for a set of race wheels?

No no no...just sell it and buy a PT laced at 28 or 24 holes and lace it to whatever wheelset I end up getting. I can get good pricing on PT's so I will probably buy a hub for each wheelset I get.

I have the Reynolds Alta Race laced to a PT SL hub and have been very happy with it. Performs well in a variety of situations including cross winds. It's not super light (I forget the exact weight) but it feels solid.

What kind of racing do you do? If you race crits, any sew up rim on any hub. Then use a wide sew up, like the Conti 25mm or Dugast(very expensive).

I love the 420's, but unless you buy them with powertap from AC, you're out of luck - they don't offer just the rim for sale.

Here are the new options with prices:

Easton Ascent II: 270$
Easton Orion II: 270$
Easton SL: 270$
Easton SLX: 270$
Reynolds Alta Race: 260$ (shipped)

At this point I am considering one pair of eastons and a set of the reynolds as I will have 2 bikes so 2 wheelsets isn't a bad idea...now I just have to decide what sets!

Can I get some too ?? I don't have big bucks to blow on wheels like 1/2 the people around here do.
