Saturday morning.....sun is out.....high near 80 today.

But MY race is a week from today.
Alas, I must head out of town to take care of the yardwork at the lake place in a few hours, where I will later tackle some hills in an LSD ride to get some saddle time in the countryside.

This is a RACING forum....
Before I head out...talk to me....who's racin' today, and what's the event?

Do you stop by BF the morning of a race day to get in the mood as you sip your 'go-juice'?

Cape Fear Road Race in NC today. Excited for it, my first road race (only done crits and circuit races before).

Grab that peloton and don't let go....otherwise it ends up being a lonely training ride.

Yep. I really just don't know what to expect, since it's so different from my previous two races, longer and more hilly.

Sit in. The race isn't that hard, but if you do too much work you could pop on the climbs...

Well, I've only been in a couple....but this is my kind of fun.

If you have the ability, then I'd sit in and try to stay in the first half of the main peloton.
The more dangerous place is at the back of course.

The toughest part is hanging when there is climbing, because that's when chunks of guys like me get busted off the back.

Have fun...post a race report after.

Cape Fear Road Race in NC today.

+1, but with Mount Mitchell on Monday, I'm just supposed to sit in today and get some blood flowing in the legs.

Friggin' rain and thunderstorms today. Wanted to get a nice 3 hour ride in today with the group with hill repeats tomorrow.....but it's looking like intervals on the trainer today, and a longish ride with some hills tomorrow. A day off on Monday, easy ride on Tuesday, hard group ride on Wedensday and then begin tapering for Sunday.

I raced twice today. First race, Masters 30/40 was great. Smooth, fast good time. Respectable finish. Second race.... guy in front of me coming through the final turn to the line, he hits a cone and goes down. I hit the cone (it was right in front of me), stayed upright but then hit the next cone and went down. I think I'm done racing anything but Masters stuff now. This is just retarded.

I *think* Riskus was in an earlier crash and broke his wrist... I'm sure he'll report in at some point. I have some bad rash but am most worried about a muscle injury in my back that is already screaming.

Whoa - sorry to hear new guy. Hope things heal up well for you. I forgot the Masters race was a combined 30/40 field, I finished 15th overall - didnt check - but if the prize $$ was split, I might have left some cash on the table!

I'm always saying that I'm done with anything but Masters, but then I go out and do the Cat 3 anyways for some reason.

Riskus - you out there? You OK?

WTF is up with these industrial park crits, there is no reason to be crashing at races like carl dolan, quicksilver, tradezone ... I don't get it.

Say it ain't so!!

On related note: there was a guy who's blog I used to read all the time. He was in a crash a couple of months ago and had to have his lower leg amputated. Talk about suckage.

Sometimes I wonder why I want to race....

Short, fast and sweet. Masters were mixed with everyone except the experts. About 2 miles from the uphill finish another old-fart and I attacked and tried to bridge to the lead 4. Almost made it and breakfast almost made a return appearance on that last hill.

Hey

I think it paid 5 deep and there were 4 30s in the first 6 or so guys, but you never know. I was 22nd overall. Nothing special, but I enjoyed it, and also loved having 3 team mates in the race... very rare for us.

I guess I'll just have to hold off on buying that new pack of gu.

Ice, advil, and tegaderm = heal well.

I did my race. Hilly RR, but it was really more like a yellow line non-crossing contest. The yellow line claimed its first DQ in the first quarter mile of the race and didn't let up. I personally witnessed at least 4 more.

The most hilarious of which I shall now detail:
Some dude was sitting at about 20th wheel complaining about the pace, imploring the better represented teams to go do some work. Being a member of such a team, I and some others told him that I was perfectly content with the pace, but if he wasn't, he should go to the front and work off some of that aggression. He finally agreed. On his way up the left side, he touched the yellow line. Immediate DQ. Hilarious.

1.5 laps to go, I get on the losing side of a gap. I'm working with a couple of guys to rectify it. Unfortunately, the guy I was behind launched out of his saddle to power up a climb and put his rear QR right into my spokes.

Day over.

That's racing.

Oh, and BTW, I just realized that my secret pre-race weapon, oatmeal cream pies has a very appropriate acronym.

Did the same race as recursive. Hilly 39 mile cat 4/5 road race. Finished 35 or so out of 65 to 75 racers. Fun Day.

Just back in town and saw your results.

You've had some bad luck out there.....but lucky that wasn't a crash I guess huh?

Wheel can be re-laced. Certainly a better outcome than a crash. But maybe I need some new wheels anyway. Something stiffer. Maybe something deep and carbon.... hmmm...

I wasn't terribly upset, because I didn't think I had a serious chance of a top 10 finish in this race anyway. But Grafton though, Grafton is my kind of race. Good prize money too. Maybe I can win my registration fee back.

OK...I'll see if we can get there that early....

Boy, it's billed as a twilight criterium, but so much is happening in the heat of the afternoon.
What's up with that?

There are only so many hours of twilight. Cromulent and I, being in the boring categories that we are, are relegated to the crappy and uninteresting part of the day.

I think.

Hip I am old enough to be in Cromulents race (2:00pm) but went with 1:10pm (recursive race) because it was shorter. See you there.

recursive I'm racing with you. and again for the juniors race. I have a feeling that this is going to be a fast and painful race. Hopefully the 5's dont' drop me. I'm not so worried about the juniors race. Oh i'm bringing a friend, and it's going to be his first race. He will either have an old trek w/ dt shifters, or a brand new CAAD 9 optimo 2. Lucky bastid. Does anybody know if they have the 10$ for a seccond race deal?

You might want to pre-register. Seems like it might fill up.
