ENOUGH!! WE NEED A <50+ ADMISSI
ON TEST

Those <50 who enter the forum (present company excepted, of course) should pass some sort of admissions test to be sure they are properly prepared and of the right mind and attitude for the 50+ Forum.

Herein we will accumulate a series of questions designed to measure just that.

Please post your questions here so they can be assembled into an exam so we can be sure the prospective <50+'ers are fully prepared to participate.

Place these in the proper order:

1. Frozen vegetables

2. 10 speed bicycles

3. The Interstate Highway system

4. Bay of Pigs

Red Baron, I wasn't thinking of a church as a commercial establishment. Here in NC, hand-held fans were all that existed, too. And all the ladies wore hats and gloves.

Have you ever handplanted tobacco off of a sled pulled along by a tractor?

I was at an LBS, deciding between a Raleigh and a Frejus. I ended-upwith a Roll Fast.

Given a choice, would you post to the 50+ forum:

1. A serious thread about bicycling

2. A funny thread about bicycling

3. A request for a grocery list?

I have hand planted teak seedlings from a crate I carried 1 kilometers up hill - does that count?

I don't have grandkids but it is my kids fault- they are plenty OLD enough to have kids. Of course, I am not old enough yet to be a grandfather which might explain the delay...

The goal of 50+ bicycling is:

1. To get to the other side

2. To write funny things on the 50+ forum

3. To get your picture in the Rogue's Gallery

or

4. All of the above.

Speaking of grocery lists, I need to run do a major shopping. AND sea scallops are on sale! I'm going to get some and pop 'em on the grill this evening. :)

Well, I clearly remember the black and whites, though not those rinky-dink tiny ones with the roundish screens. If this is a test for <50, we surely can't go back to the invention of vacuum tubes! :p

I do remember asking the TV repairman who came to set it up for us if we could still get the three channels that we had on the B&W! This very old man, Mr. Small, just chuckled and promised me I wouldn't miss a thing, and that I'd love the new set (a MONSTER console). :)

Have you ever caught rainwater off a tin roof in a barrel for hair-washing? Makes for very soft hair. :)

Outhouse - when we got one with a REAL white seat it was pure luxury.

Our well water usually wasn't.

We turned the generator on at 8:00 am, and turned it off at 8:00 pm.

The tent houses were well ventilated - lots of holes.

We fired off the boiler for hot water - once a week, whether we needed it or not.

At times we had propane lights and a propane refrigerator.

Or, we used to have a REAL ice box - oak, and an iceman.

Do you understand the concept of depression-style cookin'?

Can you use a canner?

Have you ever ridden, Al Capone-style, on the runnin' board of a '38 Plymouth? Which was cow-pie brown, by the way.

Sounds like a barracks?

A variety of living situation during my life. As a kid at a camp in the mountains with real crank phone and no commercial electricity. Summers in various locations as my dad was a park ranger in Sequoia and Yosemite (where our "well" water turned out to be polluted). As a ranger and fire lookout myself, where one summer my wife and I were at an isolated cabin with no electricity, mice all over the place, and another before I was married at another remote cabin where three of us firefighters lived two summers in old navy temporary cabins with walls a full one-quarter inch thick. Also as a camp counselor where everyone stayed in tent houses, etc.

And I thought I had all the fun at my grandparents' house (hand-built by my grandfather from an old army barracks he bought right after the war, and had brought over to Wilmington, NC, from Ft. Fisher) every summer.

On the other side of the family, used to visit my great-grandparents out in the middle of tobacco country. Flat. Hot. Humid. And I loved every minute, chasin' the pigs, running with the dogs, playin' army in the fields, climbin' on the old farm equipment (non-motorized, for my great-grandfather had quit driving his old 50's tractor in favor of his old mule and plow).

When did this become the nostalgia thread? <curious and dreamy Vega look>

 <lookin' at watch>

I need to go to the store! Back in a bit! Keep 'em comin'! :)
