For a change, I'll make this a short one.
The 3s did 67 miles/4 laps today. A few breaks formed early but didn't stick. At the end of the third lap, there were two leaders and three chasers up the road. One of the Mock Orange guys and I rode away from the rest of the field on the climb a mile or so from the finish and brought the front groups together. In the next six miles or so, the seven of us put well over a minute on the main field.
At roughly the halfway point of the last lap (with about 8 miles to go), I went through a corner on the front of the train and when I looked back there was a gap. I went into TT mode and the gap kept getting bigger, so I went for it. Amazingly, the breakaway let me ride away from them. From talking to the other guys afterward, they thought that I was a) going to blow up, and b) creating a diversion so the other FSC in the break could launch a hard attack. By the time they realized that neither of those was the case, I was long gone. They tried to organize but couldn't get enough of a move together to bring it back. I ended up coming across the line somewhere around two minutes ahead of second place.
If I never win again, I'll remember that ride.
Props to snuff, recneps, and anybody else who raced at 1 PM today. It was already warm at 8:45 when we started, but we had cloud cover for most of the first two laps. Once the sun burned the clouds off, the last two laps were good and warm. I had three bottles and actually had enough to make it through and feel pretty good, but I feel for anybody who was racing later in the day.
