Tom,

The Watts figure seems off. I suspect it is boosting the calories burnt as well. (Could it be the 30mph headwind in the calculation?) This might interest you http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2005/07/68310 It a wired article on the watts and calories burned by Fred Landis over the 2100 miles of the tour.

The headwind figure is accurate, and was actually the average minimum wind speed.

The wattage displayed does appear a bit high, but the weight loss over the ride indicated a fairly reasonable estimate of a caloric deficit I was running at, as well as me going ketonic over the ride as indicated by the output color in the pee!

I could consume an average of 2800 calories a day and the output was, according to the site, an average of 7400 calories a day, giving me a deficit of 4600 calories a day, which is a reasonably consistent figure with the weight of the bike, wind and weight and doesn't allow for additional aerodrag from the trailer or additional rolling resistance of 2 additional wheels on the ground, or the dirt/sandy road surface of 65% of the ride. I left my weight at my last official weigh in for the database, but I had a short term loss of 12 pounds over the 5 days as well, taking me to 205, part of which may have been fluid loss. I popped back up to 212 rather quickly though. Like I said in the initial post, it was an estimated burn rate though.;)

Does that include the weight of the sheep's clothing it was wearing?

I take it you haven't seen my tour report?

I had a run in with wolves up on the UP, was stalked and charged. If I hadn't had bear spray, I'd likely be dead....

2many Bikes is teasing me about that, go to touring and read the 5 days of Hell and nearly Eaten by Wolves thread.

Stickey keyboard!

I read the report, Tom. I'm sorry you had that horrible experience.

Actually, after the fact, it's pretty cool. I have one of the ultimate vacation stories and can awe and mystify my nieces and nephews with it!;)
