Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Any idea how to get trip info from Garmin eTrex Legend Cx?

I've been using an eTrex Legend for my GPS on a ride and I haven't been able to figure out how to get elevation-climbed (i.e. total feet gained over ride) info, etc from it. Does anyone know if this is possible?

You may have to connect the GPS to your computer and have it figure out that data. I have an old, just-plain Legend, which doesn't keep track of elevation gain by itself, but SportTracks (http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/) (for Windows, freeware)/Ascent (http://www.montebellosoftware.com/index.html) (for Mac, $35 but really cool) will calculate distance climbed from the GPS track.

Ascent does that. I don't know which Windows programs do.

For some reason I can't get SportTracks to install. It keeps saying it cannot access "Windows Installer Service." Any idea what's wrong? (I have .Net 1.1 and the installer service is on)

I'm a little rusty at tech support, but that sounds like a possible privileges issue. Does the account you were logged into when you tried the install have administrator privileges? My WinXP install only has one user account (so I'm administrator by default) and SportTracks installation went smoothly for me.

I finally got it to install but in a very weird way. I'd disable the installer service and then immeadiately after double-clicking the installer exe, I'd enable the installer service and then it was able to contact it and install. Very weird.

Since then, though, I have to say it's friggin awesome! I love this stuff. It's opened a whole new world to me. Now I can look at all my routes and see how much climbing I did, what speed I went at diff. gradients, check all sorts of data on diff. rides -- it's incredible.

Just one note for people: even though it claims it can import from an eTrex Legend, it can't. Instead, in MapSource, you save the tracks as ".gpx" files and then import those.

There are some "features" that aren't perfect on it but, it's FREE!

You can download your tracks data to the Garmin Mapping program to send to Excel.
