After being mauled friday by terrible tacticts and hard competition, I was really ready to make up for it today. I woke up to rain soaked roads and it looked like it was only going to get worse, but I welcomed the change of pace from hot, sunny weather. Today would be my day to suffer.
After a short warmup around the flat, mile long course we lined up for the start, all agreeing to take it easy for a lap or so and take care in the sharp corners.
Most of the faster riders were there, but the field was only 15-20 in size due to the weather. We took a pretty moderate pace for most of it, but I could tell people were starting to fade around 3/4 of the way through the 40 minute race. The rain was really starting to come down hard, and the spray off of peoples tires was constantly dowsing my glasses. I concentrated on not letting myself lose the rear tire of the next guy up, something that I have been needing to work on for quite some time. It is so much easier drafting and staying with the pack.
The last few laps saw a few attacks off the front and it was instantly strung out. I maneuvered into 7 or so position and held that until the last corner. Two guys powered hard off the front down the far right side, but I jumped on the 5th guy back's wheel down the left side. I gave it my all about 200 meters from the finish and ran out of gas with 20 meters to go.. I was in 4th, but a guy threw his bike at the line to beat me.
I ended up 5th, best finish ever, extremely happy with myself for racing like I always knew I should and making through a rainy crit with the rubber side down.
