Yesterday I set-up my training partner and friend Jackie (fresh off her 3:51:10 run at the RnR Marathon last week) on the used Trek WSD I picked up for her about a month ago, then took her down to Fiesta Island to try it out. This was her first time ever on a road bike. She was a bit hesitant at first, but quickly caught on. We quit after one lap (too much traffic and wind), but reconvened this morning with two other running friends that were also beginners on the bike. After giving lessons on how to pump up tires, we were off. Jackie immediately took off flying up the road ahead of us! After giving some on-the-fly explanations the other two friends of how the shifters worked, I took off after her camera in hand:

Unfortunately this picture doesn't capture the huge smile she had on her face!! She was having SO much fun! 12 miles later we were done, but I think she's hooked :) She still is figuring out the shifting ( I don't think she shifted all morning!!), so I set her bike up on my trainer at her apartment so she can spend some time getting more familiar this week without having to worry about staying on the road.

Yes, I know I need to tweek her position on the bike a bit. The handlebars are low (she can't really comfprtably reach the drops), so I flipped the stem after the ride. But now it looks too short on top, so I will have to get a longer stem. Otherwise the bike seems to be perfect for her! And she is VERY happy!

Is this CRB?

Nice bike. She did great. Shifting is overrated anyway. We bumped into a woman who had yet to figure out the shifting sequence during an organized ride.

 Awesome, Mark!!! Thanks for sharing. She looks lovely (my, my, them pretty athletic legs). Tell your friend, Jackie, that it just gets better and kudos to you as her good friend and training partner. I bet she did have a huge smile on her face as we can all remember our first couple of rides. :)

Yes, but now that she's on a the bike, I think I'll drop CRB (that was just a play on Jason's alphabet girls anyways). Fortunately you don't really need to shift on Fiesta Island unless the wind is blowing, and it was still pretty calm at 8am. I have a funny story about local woman triathlete, nutritionist, and author that rode for a number of months before she learned how to shift!!

I suppose "Jackie" would be a good thing to call her.

Mea Culpa...she asked about bike shorts, and said there was a Pearl Izumi store across the street from her work. I responded: "I've read good things about the Sugar Shorts"....

they must be comfy, since I heard her recommending them to the other woman beginner that rode with us today.

Truthfully, 5" inseam Sugar shorts are downright frumpy compared to the shorts many women runners wear.

Yes, Zoot has some nice triathlon clothing. When we were at B&L in Solana Beach last Friday buying helmets, she spotted the Zoot TRIfit brief, and asked about them since her ultimate goal is to do a triathlon. I only said "many women compete in those".

You should have mentioned Faris, too.

I did as a matter of fact, adding something about him being a "crazy German". She understood that since she had studied in Germany for a year.
