Hopefully someone took some pictures because I didnt.
Arrived at GP (Griffith Park) at bit after 7 , had some issues with the parking arrangements....they wanted us to go some remote lot...but there were people in this log and tons of spaces...and its where we alwyas parked...we the parking gestapo came by to tell us to move...we have already unloaded and said no way...he proceed to get rude, but there want much he could do...
So we start prepping and Octico and the lovely Kristine arrive and park near us...
We head down to checkin and we meet up with sshakari and his buddy Jack as well as Tom another friend of ours...
Checkin was pretty slow...after all these year I would have thought they would have orgainized better..it was really the layout of the checkins that was all wrong...anyway..got thru...got goodie bag..
We lined up...but serg had a flat...luckily the onsite mechanics fisec it fast so he was able to start with us.
My plan was to regroup at the end of the bike path, and veer of the route to go down Riverside Dr..I refuse to ride the 2.5 mile wannabe bike path...I saw a guys wheel fall off last year on that part...
well they announced right before the start that we would not be riding there... cool
So off we go...thru GP and onto the BP...one one the BP , people started passing and a few pacelines formed...
We go to the end regrouped, except for Tom..we couldnt keep up the pace..we were doing about 22 on the BP...I was hanging in pretty well, but was concerned for how long...
We wound thru the neighborhoods instead of the bad part..and that was nice...made a quick pit stop at the first rest stop...there didnt seem to be any pottys right at the start area??? But Serg got ahead of us and didint know we were stopping..
Off we go thru downtown...pretty good clip. Thankfully some of the really bad roads had been repaved so it wasnt all that bad...I may not have launched my camera...but too late...
Onto the LA River Path...
Mark, Jack and I...jack is leading..he is a bad***** rider..and has only been riding a year or so I think...
Another guys joins in, asks if he can help pull...I said sure...They guys are flying..agian 20-22mph...all I could do to hang on...but I did.
Mark was in front of me..I told him I wasnt going to pull , and he agreed...I would have slowed us down..
We went sailing by other pacelines and riders...wow..a new experience for me!
We stopped a the rest stop in Paramount for some fuel and liquid...we were there maybe 10 minutes...
off again...that other guys didnt realize we left, so he chased us down..
Tom was just coming as we left...he was not sure if we would do the 70 or do the 45 and take the train back..he has not done that much mileage before..I will update what he did when I hear from him!
A few more people jump in...still doing 20-22.....
Hit LB and the route thru there was much better than last year...way less traffic....
So we saw Serg at the rest stop...We hung for a bit then headed out...I think the avg speed was 18.5
Saw tom as we re-entered the BP
I told Mark I couldnt do the same pace going back..and he agreed....
So we were pacing about 17-19...a few people join in...a few pass...so they picked the pace up..duh.....I dropped back a bit...but was still managing 17-18..Serg hung back with me so I could draft him...I appreciated that but told him not to worry...The sun finally came out...not to warm..so that was good.
Saw a bunch of SFVBC'ers on their way down..was going to fast to call out... Saw John and Kristine...
I think I saw Bernie who said "BF Jersey"
I did hear a couple of guys say that later on, but had my head down and didnt see who it was.
Also Saw my friend Linda and Debbie at reststop 2...they cheered us on...Mark thought i would stop...but i was in a groove and didnt want to stop! unusual for me!:o
Got a 2nd wind as we crossed over to the other side of the river...held my own till about 1 mile before the path exit...then I was starting to feel I was hitting the wall...I checked my avg and it was 17.5 beofer I exited the path...
Then on the street back I was suffering a bit....thought I was getting a cramp...so just kept taking liquids..never cramped...but also my knee was sore...I think I have soem seat adjustments to do...
Finally made it to the GP BP.. got a another 2nd wind..and was able to get up to 16-17...but there were still alot of the families form the family ride...so it was at times an obstacle course...many people riding on all the way on the left...or across both lanes..yeesh...
I navigated my way thru there..and reached the finish...saw Serg and jack...and thnaked them for the pulls they did...
then went to meet mark at the truck...
71 miles avg speed 16.4...which is a PB for me...
I had mentioned to mark that I was going to push it today to see how I did...I think we were both suprised..he was suprised I came in so soon after him...he never dropped me till 3/4 of the way!
And when I got in the truck it was barely 1PM...that was early for me to finish...
Hopefully I wont be totally stiff and sore tommorrow...
Now I also must say that I havent been on the bike in a week and a half...not sure how much this helped me??
Mark also said he saw shprung leaving as he came in...not sure what other BF'ers were there..
Overall its a good ride..a bit crowded....but you ride thru places you probably would never go otherwise!

I did the 45 miles and learned a few things. First, this was the longest I've ever ridden on my bike, mountain that is... All in all, I rode just over 61 miles today. I learned that I need to put sunbock on the top of my knees. After the ride, I noticed that my knees (just above and below my shorts line) started to get really warm. I took a quick look and discovered I have a sunburn there. On the bike path heading towards Long Beach, my right calf started to cramp up. I realized that I wasn't taking enough fluids. I started to chug but ran out of water and began to cramp up. Sure enough, my left calf started to cramp up as well. My friends were in front and I didn't want to slow down so I push on. By the end of the bike path, the water I drank began to take affect and my leg cramps were gone. It was difficult to judge how much fluids you need to drink on a long ride (it was for me).
The train ride back was uneventful. Almost fell asleep waiting to get off. I think next time, I'll just ride the way back. I had a great time and would recommend this ride to everyone.

i bailed on this ride. after thinking about it this week, i was afraid it would be too much of an obstacle course...slowing and re-starting, etc....frustrating.
i'll consider my entry fee to be a "charitable donation".

#1 - great report, Herb. Thank you. I was curious how it went since I couldn't join. Glad you guys didn't have to go on the crummy part of the path!
#2 - Clan Lee - good job! On a mtn bike no less. As for both the knee burn and cramps - yup, you are correct. Put tons of sunscreen on those knees. I put zinc paste on mine as mine tend to burn horrible. The knees are actually the most exposed! Also, on the cramps, try eating something salty in the morning (or drinking a V8) That will help. :)

Sorry, but I am not verbose as some of you, I wish I could long reports. Kristine and I get to the parking and as we pull in we see Herb and Mark. Registration was very disorganized it took 30 minutes to register.
The 70 mile ride had half the amount of people as the 40 mile ride. I think if I do this ride again I will be doing this 70 mile ride. Not because of a smaller pack, but because it took FOREVER to get back on the Metro. We did the first 35 miles in under 3 hours it took almost 2.5 hours to do the last 10 miles (1.5 hours of that was on the metro)!!!!! When we got to LBC we had to wait for two trains. Argggh we did not get back to the start line until 2:30pm. They need to do something about that train ride back. Maybe the 45 mile ride should be an out and back to the 2nd rest stop.
I was very proud of Kristine this was her 3rd ride since the accident. She did get a little tired toward the end, but she just kept hanging on. I would ask her if she wanted to slow down she would say with a half grin "No I am fine". Alright here are the pics.

Great report Herb and a good job today.
I left the house around 6:30 on my bike to make this ride into my first century. Met Herb, Mark and Jack at registration area. It was a great loop around the LA area. On the way back on the bike path I got dropped by 2 15 year olds on mountain bikes (it was hot and I was running out of gas)! Had a great time today and completed my first century at 104 miles. I was home around 2PM and went swimming in the pool.

Yup, that was me. Sorry I got too late a start to have a chance to chat with you guys. I had a pretty good day, even with the delays at the train station, and actually pulled my two riding buddies from the Foothill Club against the headwinds, which were pretty bad going south. Averaged 14.5, which is quite fast for me.
Wife and I had a party to go to later that afternoon, and I disgraced myself by eating everything in sight. Here's something weird: I got a sunburn on the top of my head that matches the vents in my helmet! It makes me look like some senior citizen version of Captain Marvel. Jeez. Damned good thing classes are over, or my students would give me huge grief over it.
Registration was indeed a bloody mess, and a staggered start for the 45-mile ride would have been a lot better--say 25 riders at a time. Also, there needed to be someone inside Union Station pointing riders to the right exit. That aside it was a good ride, with a nice spirit in the crowd. The route through downtown LA streets was much better than last year's, and no one missed that broken-up stretch. I had hopes that it'd be repaired and part of the bike path by now, but no such luck.

I did the 70 miler and had fun. Roads were improved and signage was MUCH better this year. I never looked at the route slip. I got a lot of pulls so that helped my time. I blew off all stops on the way back, no big deal. My biggest complaint other than registration is the lack of potties at the stops. I only saw two at each rest stop. NOT ENOUGH! It made for long lines.
I had a PB. At Long Beach my sphincter and I had a disagreement. I was looking at the long lines and knowing I am wearing bids I decided to lock it down and go another 30 some miles. I knew I could do this. Not only do I make it but I drop off HerbM and drive home. Well I had no time to unpack. Well you get the idea. To drive the point home, the spousal unit tells me that she has to drive over to her mothers for a short and I better have the air in house cleared out by the time she turns. She says I ruin all the good air in the house. I got that done straight away. I like her and want to keep her around.
I also saw something on this ride I had only read and heard about. It went down like this. I am 5th in an 8 or 9 bike pace line. We are on the way back but still on the bike path doing about 16.5mph. I notice the saddle bag of the guy in front of me is all wet like he had been riding in the rain. Then I notice his saddle is wet too. I am thinking no way. I fall back a little to Jack who is just behind me. I ask him to confirm the wet saddle bag. He tells me he does not even want to know shaking his head. Jack being a strong rider just pulls out of the line and leaves everyone is the dust. I can not take my eyes off the wet saddle and bag. All of sudden I get a whiff of urine. I am done with this and pull out of the line and leave too. I have my own issues I am dealing with and I don’t need this kind of help.
Later that evening while sitting on my patio with the spousal unit over a bottle of red wine I proceed to tell her about the ride. I tell her about the guy with the wet saddle bag. I explain to her I could not do this. First you have the padding in your shorts to deal with, and then some $100+ saddle and the saddle bag which will have to be washed. The contents of the bag will either have to be disposed of or washed, probably both. Professionals don’t have to pay for their equipment nor do they have saddle bags so I guess it works for them in a pinch. After a moment of though I decide I was lucky he did not decide to pancake.

BTW am I the only one who got lost leaving the last SAG stop? Mile 63 ---> 70 ended up being a solo ride on a busy road instead of the calm bike path I was hoping for. I hat getting lost at the end of a long ride!!
Rode the LA River Ride today. Nice turn out, saw some BF jerseys out there.
Stats: 70 miles/3h55m We rode past the jail housing Paris, lots of press there as we rolled through yelling "free Paris". Decent SAG food, (anyone wondering why have a saddle bag...I collected enough Cliff Shot Bloks etc to recoup my entrance fee!...yeah I'm cheap like that ;-) ) Ride captain Daryl Hanna was really hot in person, she hasn't changed much. They said it was a record turn out...maybe like 2000 people. Cloudy till 10:40, then nice and sunny but not too hot for the rest. Nice flat, well organized ride. I liked it!
And here's some pics:

I did the 70 miler at the request of a friend who is trying to get into riding. He only has a mountain bike so that is what I did it on also. All in all, I have to say that it was a pretty good ride.
Surprisingly I had zero problems parking (also sent to the back lot but it was empty as was the road to it - located directly behind check-in area), got checked-in in about 3 minutes too! As I got in line (about 15 till 8:00), one of the volunteers yelled out that if you were doing the 70, go to the front of the line...
Anyway, I noticed a few BF jersey's and was pretty much standing next to the couple shown in the pics on the first page - also saw a few on the ride. Since I'm a BF newbie, I didn't say hi to anyone.
Unfortunately my buddies bike broke down thanks to two broken spokes so we had to wait for another friend to bring a replacement wheel. That delayed us until about 9:30 about 12 miles into the ride. See how it is, the one time you don't bring a tool, you need it! I always carry toolkit that includes a spoke wrench and for some reason I decided to take it out The one god damn time I finally needed it.
Rode by the jail, heard everyone saying 'free Paris', screw that! We yelled out, rot in jail you !@#$$! Just my opinion...
Like others have said, the weather was good and it was probably the easiest 70 miles I have ever done.

I have to admit, that's a pretty studly photo of Herb and Mark in their BF colors. Caption reads: "We have come for your women."
