Montana State championship road race today. I bridged to a 7 man break 6 miles in and we had a 5 minute gap at mile 36. The 7 man break was down to 4 at mile 64 and we had 3 mins on ten chasers, with a tailwind.
Then it happened. I shifted 1/4 of the way up one of the "rollers" (400 ft tall rollers), and snapped my chain. Today was my first DNF. Ever.
Funny how it happens during the winning break at the state championship race. Oh well.
On the lighter side, a promising youth that was a 5 at the beginning of the season WON today. Not just the 3's. He beat the cat 2's and the cat 1's. This was only his second race as a 3...

Sorry about that, Cypress. Your next race is September, correct?

dude...
This has been a rough couple weeks for the BF racers...
Sorry to hear it, Cypress. Sucks to have the legs and end up with a snapped chain. :(

Those are the kids that wind up racing in Europe in the UCI.

I flatted at mile 30 of 40 at RR earlier this Spring. Worst feeling ever.:(

Here's my tip on avoiding flats;
Keep an eye on the road.

Crap. Sounds like you did great until the part where you couldn't do anything about it. <sigh>

If a story like that was told about a professional, there'd be 18 doping threads...

More like 18 doping threads, 5 related doping allegations, 7 'he's clean' threads and a Velo News story.
the thighs of cypress are too strong for nancy-boy chains.

More like 18 doping threads, 5 related doping allegations, 7 'he's clean' threads and a Velo News story.
And then 6 other threads questioning the durability of Dura-ace chains.

Ugh. One thing has bothered me since yesterday: A Montana Velo guy sat behind our break for 35 miles taking only 4-5 pulls. As soon as we hit the hills he sprang to life like he meant business. We had a good paceline going for the entire break. Short pulls, tons o' cooperation. But that one guy! Matt and I thought we would be dropping him on one of the bigger hills, but nope. Free ride for him.
Jackass.
(We did eventually drop him, but not until much later)

Or even two and a half if you prefer. A single week could not possibly contain superweek(tm)
Edit: Some advice: Don't pedal so hard.

At a race last year a guy in front of me had the same thing happen to him, although he was in that desperation shift mode where you can hear things crunching. Next thing I know *fwip-fwip-fwip* his broken chain goes flying past just inches from my face.

+1
Cypress, I can relate. I'm having a new RD shifter installed on my bike. It got stuck during one of my races.
While your mechanical put you out right away, mine allowed me to suffer in the 15-12 cogs until the bell lap. But, mine didn't happen during the state championship.
Bummer. Better luck next time.
