I wear full-fingers because i always have coming from a mtb background, and yes they do prevent road rash o' the hands. Just make sure you get some nice XC gloves with light fabric/mesh on the back of your hand and you can wear them in any temperature. I've raced all summer with full finger gloves.

Just get some BMX gloves with the reinforced knuckles. I meant to get some for my track races, but forgot.

I had the short-finger version of the PI Gel Vents before I got Specialized gloves on a team deal... they're awesome, and come in a full-finger version.

I find those to be a bit warm for summer use and went with these (PI Ziltch gloves) instead: http://www.pearlizumi.com/product.php?mode=view&product_id=793209&type_id=1&sport_id=5&category_id=9&color_code=232

They're ff but with minimal padding. I've been wearing mine daily since the early spring and they're still holding up well. On the PI site you can barely make it out but there's a pattern on the outside half of the gloves that looks really good (definite style points bonus which of course makes you go faster too). The only real padding on the gloves is a gel "disc" around the ulnar nerve.

I commute in Specialized full finger gloves with armor. Not really any warmer, no padding, and I wouldn't hesitate to compete in them for the short haul. DP gave solid advice about the PI Gel Vent gloves being pretty comfy as well.
