Summer Solstice road race, Wilmington, Ohio. June 8th, 9th, and 10th
Well 3 weeks ago I wasn’t sure I was going to this 3 day race due to a knee injury. I was able to fix the cause (my seat height and right cleat position) but still had some gimp going on Wednesday night on a trial run.:(
This would be my last race(s) as a Cat 5 so I wanted to go out with a bang. Goal was to win GC by Sunday. Motto for the RR’s – a gem from Botto – “eat off their plate before you eat off yours”. This was harder to do then I thought. I chased down a few attacks I felt needed brought back but won’t detail them below.
1st stage Friday night 39 miles – 3/13 mile laps of fairly flat farmland with hella wind.
We don’t get started until 7:30 p.m. Don’t get me wrong I like sunsets too but this was a bit late to start. Race is immediately controlled by 7 Hills, a Cincinatti team. They block most of the race. I sit and wait for the sprint while my unattached friend attacks every 10 minutes and wears himself out. One unattached attacks 5 miles from finish and makes it stick. Final 400 meters 7 Hills gives leadout to they’re guy and I have his wheel at 50 meters, pass him at 25 and throw only to get beat at line by ½ wheel by an insanely fast junior Cat 5 rider who had my wheel.
I drink Endurox and soak my legs this night in ICE water for 10 minutes. It works as I'm fresh Sat. Knee is fine.
2nd stage Sat. morning – 39 miles hilly rollers.
Still windy so pack stays together most of race. My buddy attacks like Vino. I sit and wait – “eat off their plate” We come into last turn and I’m at back of pack somehow. No left of yellow line until 200 meters is in full effect. Always look for the opportunity in the back. Somebody will make the mistake. All of sudden at 500 meters what was three wide to the back splits to 2 wide with one guy sitting in the middle front. It was a total gift, I ride right up the middle and get his wheel as he explodes into a sprint at 300 meters. I pass him at 200 meters and have lead. I look at speedo and am at a Cypress lite 37 miles an hour. I get passed by one guy by a bike length, but take 2nd, and more importantly have GC by 1 second with time bonuses.
3rd stage Sat. afternoon TT – 7 miles
I won, that is all. Now 18 seconds up on GC.
Endurox and and ice water leg soak Sat. night. Legs fresh on Sunday.;) Knee is good.
4th stage – 37 miles, 3 laps of flat farmland.
Motto for this race – protect my position on GC and don’t crash. The 7 Hills team brings 11 guys to this last race. I get there late and make it to start line 2 minutes before we start, no warmup and at the back of 35 guys. 7 Hills blocks and sends 2 man attack off with first 5 minutes. I sit at the back and keep tabs on who means nothing to me and who I will kill to chase down. I keep repeating “eat off their plate before yours”. I work up to mid pack by third lap. On lap 3 several guys get off the front and I can’t see the GC guy I need to see. He’s off the front trying to bridge these guys who are 150 yards out now. F%&K! I tell the guy to my left I’m coming the f%&k over, MOVE! I get free and quickly catch my GC nemesis and then bridge other 2 riders. We then reel in other two 7 Hill riders and in doing so let an unattached off the front. He makes it stick into the wind for 7 miles. I wasn’t gonna sprint but changed my mind when another 7 Hiller cut in front from my left and almost crashed me out. Last 500 meters I’m 3 rows back by yellow line. 7 Hills has front 2 rows 3 wide with their guys. At 300 meters someone goes on the shoulder and tries to break free. At 200 meters an easy right turn and everyone goes. I break left and a 7 Hiller rubs shoulders with me. I break free and sprint like a raped ape. Throw the bike and get 3rd. Had I not thrown bike I would’ve had 4th. Race over. So long to the 5’s. I'll post pics when I can.

there wasn't too much excitement for me in the 4's. only one break stuck all weekend, and i got bunched in on all of the sprints including a fairly hairy sprint on the last day that had me locking up my rear wheel. congrats on the cat 5 domination. the only thing i did well this weekend was working for a teammate for gc placing and snagging every bottle i went for in the feed zone (speaking of which, the saturday race feed zone was not located in a good place). what team are you on/bike do you ride? i will try to say hey at the next race.

Propose a useful Cat 4 motto for Daytonian to crush the souls of the weak...
I propose: Eat your cake and have it too (as opposed to the oft incorrectly stated eat your cake and have it too)
Congrats!

Yes. I appparently will get a set of tires in the mail for GC win.
Me and 4th place guy from yesterdays race had to review video of finish with race directors it was that close. I got third by less than 6 inches.
Nicely done weekend!
Thanks. Maybe see you at Oak Creek ride sometime

the guy that won the 3's is in his first year racing. ended up riding at 15:13 which we calculated at around 27.5. that was the 4th fastest time overall including the 1/2's. he used his regular road bike with aero bars which he set up in his bathroom mirror the day before the race. the kid is a freak. he has enough points for cat 2 i think, but may still be short a couple, and is thinking about sticking around the 3's for a little bit longer (he has only done 20 or so races i believe, most of which he broke away to win). that would be impressive to jump from 5 to 2 in one season.
if i would have done the time trial, i would have been around 20 minutes. my legs were pretty tired from just the race on saturday.
One of our riders went from 5-1 in 1.5 seasons. Sounds like another Abe-freak in the making.

I didn't stick around to see who won the overall. Is he local?

same guy that won the tt won the overall: dan c. apparently there was a break on sunday that he had to make in order to keep the lead, ended up getting 5th on the day and taking the gc. he is local, works at my lbs. pretty cool kid. freak of nature kind of talent similar to the afore mentioned abe (i saw that guy attack and beat the 1/2 pack at the pur tour a few years ago: that guy is a monster) he is the guy from anthem that has the kuota and rides crit practice on tuesdays.
Ah, I know who that is. Man, I didn't realize he was such a freak.

Did I catch any of you guys on Saturday? http://jjakucyk.exposuremanager.com/g/summer_solstice_6907
That Sunday race was interesting. Kudos to my mates on Mercy HealthPlex/7 Hills for all the blocking. I got spit out half way through the last lap when the dam broke and finished two minutes behind the pack. In the two other races I've done I was off the back within five miles, so this was a big improvement.

yeah, i am in a few. my favorie one from saturday was the onw with a junior (grant?) shooting water at you. funy stuff. also, there were several pics in the ault park race on wednesday. great pics.
nice job to hang in there. isn't racing bikes super fun when you are able to hang during the race? i remember when i started, all i wanted to do was sit in the back and watch the race unfold. soon enough you will be initiated your own attacks and getting in position for the sprint.

I'm the guy in green kit behind leader in DSC 5544. Can't remember why I was in a 4 man break on Saturday, but I'm sure I felt it was important at the time. Were you shooting by the feed zone.
Mercy's (7 Hills) blocking Sunday was effective for 2-1/2 laps. Results are posted at ohiovalleyracing, I thought they would do better than they did.

Yep, this is me on one of my suicide breaks: http://jjakucyk.exposuremanager.com/p/men_cat_12_3__4_6907/dsc_580125.
I had a deal with my wife: if I was top 10 on GC after Saturday's races, she'd watch our daughter Sunday so that I could finish the series (Sunday is usually "my day" with the girl). Since I have no aero gear and suck at TTs generally, my only shot at making time was a break. But with such a flat course and with so many teams trying to keep it together for their designated TTer, nothin' was goin' nowhere. Oh well, I had fun.
Thanks for the photos and congrats on feeling stronger in the 5s! If it matters, I think you're doing it the right way: start racing early and work your way up. Much better than waiting until you're strong enough that you won't really get anything out of the 5s.

I was watching the corner just after the feed zone, so just 100-200 yards away. No shade at all.

At this point we have strength in numbers, but not a huge amount of experience. The blocking was a good team tactic, but there wasn't really any plan for what to do with it. The two guys who were off the front from the get-go hadn't planned to do that, so the situation just sort of unfolded on its own. Our results would've been better had we set up some guys for the sprint at the end by not letting them pull, etc. Of course the other problem is that when you're blocking you're also pulling, and that wind really beat on those at the front. The air was also really dry too, and even though I finished three water bottles during the race I was pretty well dehydrated. Live and learn.

I walked right by you with water bottles for teamates in the feed zone for Sat. cat 4 RR. Your right about no shade.
Nice work. Enjoy your time in the 4's - my guess is you won't be there too long.

ahhh, it's tricky. you have to go to the 5 race day, 5644 is in the 1234 races, dsc 5544 is in the 5's. at the top there is a tab to go to summer solstice page, then go to the 5/juniors races. it should be there (took me a while to figure that one out too)
