I talked to a friend about moving up on the inside of the pack before a turn. You know, accelerate up when the accordian is slowing.

He says, " Be careful on those inside line moves, though. I too try that, but I looked into the etiquette, first. Apparently, you are supposed to be in position 10m before the riders you hope to be inside of commit to the turn (i.e., start leaning). Try to be in their peripheral vision, as well, like almost beside them, so they know you are there, too. Sometimes they force you into the curb because they simply don't know you are there.

I think the same rule applies to F1 racing. Once someone starts turning, you can't come in into their inside. You have to stake your claim to the inside line before the other driver commits to the turn."

I got my info off of the ITV website...that sounds better.

I just checked the F1 site and they said he might race next week so I guess he didn't break his leg after all. They'll evaluate him and make a decision on Thursday. Concussion might keep him out of the car for a couple of weeks.

I'll be at the race in Indy next weekend.

Yes, make your move beforehand, so the other riders know you have the inside. If you want until the actual corner, you will cause a crash

I'm always amused by what people think will work in a race. For instance, use of the word "inside." If someone is behind me going into the turn and says "inside," I'm not giving up my line. If someone is next to me going into the turn, their use of "inside" is more of a "hey, here I am, don't dive bomb this turn."

There's absolutely no reason for me to yield to someone trying to make a jacka$$ move diving to the inside of the turn, and it's hilarious when they get all mad at everyone that they got pinched.

and why does the accordian effect happen? the 'tards at the back who think they can move up by cutting off other riders and taking a slower line through the corners that slows you all down at the back.

if someone yells inside to me they better let me know it's a friend or teammate, otherwise i close the door. there are times to say inside when things get tight and to avoid going down but not because you want to move up in the pack

I dunno, often when someone calls out "inside" on me, I'll let them past and take their wheel up to a better position.

Since we're not connected like train cars, reaction times create speed differentials. 2nd wheel drops 6" in a turn, 3rd turns that into 12", 4th into 18"...

On the acceleration out of the turn, the same thing happens.

He could have avoided any injury with a lugged steel frame. It was warm in Montreal, the CF monocoque musta melted.

Rule no 1 in bicycle racing is the guy in front has the right of way. I'm going to assume the guy I'm trying to get inside of will not be nice (or maybe not even see me), so when we are both about to lean over and turn in, I'm going to be right next to him so he can push me all he wants, but I'm not going down. Anything less, I will back off.

There's no such thing as calling inside.

In motorcycle racing, Its called "showing a wheel" as you go up the inside into a corner.
