A few years ago I was driving in the Roslyn/Port Washington area of Long Island (NY) and came to this humongous hill (Beacon Hill Rd). I remember saying to the people in the car that there was no way in hell I could possibly ride a bike up THAT hill.

I was wrong.

Congratulations. Good to hear you finally made it.

I think we should have a tradition of naming unconquered hills.

Like the hill of tears, or the hill of pain and suffering.

Well done and well-earned.

There aren't a lot of hills in SW Ohio but if it has a name you know it can be tough. On our Sunday morning ride we had to take a detour due to road construction. This detour took us up "Boy Scout" hill. It's a short steep hill but the handicap is you can't get any speed up as you approach due to an intersection at the bottom. By the time I reached the top I was in the lowest gear I could find but I made it:eek: We also encountered "Pig Farm" hill but thankfully we approached it from the top. What a trip down - I rode the brakes and still reached 34 mph:D

And people want to know why I'm such a fan of disk brakes. Heat rejection, first and formost.

WTG! When you got to the top, did you ride back down and do it again?

Stop using the brakes and you can get to the next uphill faster.

I have hills that are just a matter of routine on my rides. I can still remember the early days of riding when I used to walk up them though.

Unfortunately there's no next hill at this point as it dead-ends into another road:(

I find myself getting better at hill climbing. I'm not sure how I'll do on long gradual climbs since most of the hills I ride are of the short, steep variety.

I'm beginning to think there may be something wrong with me as I want to go back and tackle Bruckner hill. That's the steep winding hill from a recent bike tour. I rode it but had to do it in stages......I want to be able to ride up it without stops:mad:

And so the addiction begins. If a year ago you told me I would love hills, I would have told you that you were crazy. But now - bring em on - the uglier the better. Sunday morning I did a bit of a ride in the morning (and a Tandem ride in the afternoon) - it was 20 Kilometers one direction. Lots of rolling hills. What was cool is that the hills now look bigger from a car than from a bike. I am usually half way up before I notice them.

Of course it helps that I have dropped 35 lbs since the early days... :D

ALL RIGHT! It's good to be wrong once in a while! Nice going.
