Howdy all,

I need to pull a few centuries before the TBP. I've yet to mark my first century this season.

I'm planning on riding the Copper Triangle century this week ...the specific day is flexible for me. I'm proposing either Saturday or Sunday to accomodate most people's days off work. This will be a no drop ride.

This is an very easy ride to self support because there are regular stops for water and food. The route is about 85 miles and about 7K feet of elevation gain. It usually takes me about 5.5 to 6 hours at a tempo pace ...not too fast, but faster than casual ...not stopping for too long either. We can organize a couple of groups for different speeds and regroup at a few key locations if needed.

If you're not familiar with this ride then read on... It will start at Copper Mountain Resort and ascend up hwy 91 to the top of Fremont Pass ...down to Leadville ...ascend again up hwy 24 to Tennessee Pass ...down to Camp Hale ...up to Battle Mountain ...down to Minturn, through Vail along the frontage road ...up Vail Pass on the MUP ...down to Copper. Optional cocktails and food to follow the ride at the Tiki Bar at the Dillon Marina.

The views on this ride are reason enough to join. We'll ride along the Ten Mile Range, Holy Cross Wilderness and Gore Range. The elevations we'll be riding at are perfect for priming for the Triple, if you're signed up for that ride. The hill climbing is also perfect for preparing for the Triple as well. In fact, the Copper Triangle has long been a Triple primer by Team Evergreen as it is usually scheduled as a group ride the week before the Triple.

The weather is looking pretty awesome from Thursday through the weekend. As you know, you've got to seize the good days when you can. If you're interested send me an email.

I would be interested. But I am definately still at the casual level. (maybe slower :D) I will wait to see who else responds.
Might be something we want to try with more advanced notice so more people have time to plan. Just a thought.

I am highly interested.

My pace on last weekend's RMCC ride, Golden -Lookout - Idaho Springs - Echo Lake loop - 72 miles, 7600 feet of climbing - 6 hours, 11.8mph.

If that wouldn't slow you down too much, I'm in if the weather is good.

Well HELLO Nick :)

Funny Shifty was just asking about you this morning. Well I'm totally interested in this ride since I AM doing the Triple By-Pass. I would say Saturday is a good day for me right now but thats only if I don't do another mountain bike race. :)

Talk to you soon and its good to have you come bless us with your presence!!! :)

Howdy everyone!

Sorry if this seems a little last minute ...that's how I roll. I like to throw it out there and then get to it. This is a simple day ride that really doesn't require too much more than a bike, a ride to Copper, a day off and the motivation to do it. Maybe you Front Rangers could carpool?

Superdex has already commited to Sunday. So I'm asking the above collective if they can roll Sunday. It would be really swell to ride with Snowy again and have a first ride with valygrl and Pwnt.

Like I said - it's a no drop ride. So don't fret about your pace. Just show and we'll go - as a team ...no man or woman left behind. We'll regroup at Fremont, Leadville, Tennessee Pass, Battle Mtn, Minturn, and Vail Pass.

We'll start early. Let's say early is 6:00 am. That's the official start time for the Triple - might as well make it a REAL Triple training ride. Beside, that way we'll be done no later than 1:00 - 2:00. But probably earlier.

My wife will probably join us too.

(snip) ...and its good to have you come bless us with your presence!!! :)

My apologies. :)

A new baby ...a new career ...MTB kids coach ...MTB race team ...traveling a lot to see family.

Also, I got three weeks at the beach in March. Gotta love Longboat Key for that yearly recuperative infusion of negative ions, sun, boozing, eating too much and sailing.

Life's been pretty busy - BUT GOOD!

Sorry if this seems a little last minute ...

Well, it makes sense with how unpredictable the weather is. I won't commit until the day before.

We'll start early. Let's say early is 6:00 am.

Easy for you to say, you live in Dillon!!! From Boulder, I would have to get up at 4:00am or earlier - or camp in Dillon .... which looks like a problem. The online reservation system seems to require you stay friday and saturday night, and maybe a bunch of the sites are still closed. Or if you show up on Saturday, do they let you stay for one night?

Any camping available? Or are you allowed to sleep in your car at the ski resort?

I want to do this, but I can't afford a hotel, and 4 am.... ugh. I'll have to think about that.

Bummer, I have friday and saturday off. Sunday I go back to work. :( Post up some pics when you get back so I know what I missed.

Email sent with info.

(snip)I won't commit until the day before.

Now that's what I call last minute livin' ...the weather outlook is showing high pressure, sunny skies, extreme UV ...around 70

(snip) I would have to get up at 4:00am or earlier - or camp in Dillon ...are you allowed to sleep in your car at the ski resort? .... ugh.

I was kinda kiddin' about the 6am start to see who might protest. You win. That means you bring the coffee and bagels. :D

I'm certainly open to a later start. How 'bout you propose a time that'll work for you and throw it at the thread to see if it sticks with the collective.

Nick - cute baby! and wife!

Dex - I might take you up on that.

Question for All (just a question, not lobbying): is Sunday set in stone, sounds like pwnt and snowy are more saturday-ish. Doesn't matter to me.

As long as you like sesame bagels and Peets French Roast. Who's bringing the toaster?

06-11-07, 05:51 PM
Okay...

valygrl doesn't want to raise her hand and propose a later start time. I'm gonna officially amend the start time to 7:30 am.

Beside, most coffee joints don't open 'till 6:00 anyway.

As far as Sunday verse Saturday ...I'm inclined to keep the day unchanged. Scott chimed in first for Sunday as a definite and I've yet to hear from Snowy one way or another. But I'm in no way in charge ...just an organizer and facilitator. You guys can decide these things too.

Thanks for teh compliment valygrl.

I have used way too many sick days as of late. They all seem to be on Sunday too. I think they might be on to me! <shifty eyes>

Oh well, I'm sure there will be others. Right?

no prob. To make a 7:30 start I'll be rolling past that way right at 6. You want a ride? You get there ;)

(for what it's worth) Sunday is my only day; I'm riding the Greenwood Village Goosechase (http://www.goosechase.org/) with the girlfriend on Saturday....

Snowy!!!

That's awesome. It's looking like a group of 5. Women out-numbering the men by one.

Maybe we'll pick up more riders on this thread in the next few days.

Sounds like a fun ride, I've always wanted to ride the Copper Triangle. I could only make it on Saturday though. My wife is going to do her first triathlon in Boulder on Sunday so I'll be there supporting her.

The weather is holding strong ...nestled right in the middle of great riding weather days.

Those of you who aren't able to make this one might look at the Mt. Evans ride the following weekend. Let's hope the weather is good that weekend too.

The weather forecast has gotten a tad better for Sunday. It's going to be 75-80 and sunny. That means it's going to feel like 80-85.

Dehydration and electrolyte management come into play for me when the thermometer rises. I think it's an old dude thing. You young chickens probably don't need to worry 'bout that kinda crap.

Might as well soak me in formaldehyde and nail the lid shut.

I looked at NOAA for Leadville, I'm seeing 71, 10% chance of T-storms, and 10-20 mph west wind, gusts up to 30. What location are you checking?

Bring your sunscreen AND your rain jacket. ;)

I'm psyched for this ride!!!!!

Ride Report

valygrl, superdex and myself met at Copper and took off at 8:00 ...'cause I was the late one. What can I say?... It was father's day morning (my first) and I wanted to hold my little girl for a little while before taking off.

We took the clockwise route and attacked Fremont ascent first. The weather was perfect ...sunny and in the 70 - 80 degree range. The wind was fairly still until we started our descent from Tennessee Pass towards Camp Hale. It began to blow slightly into us. But the fates were on our side ...as we turned from our northerly track east towards Vail we had a tail wind all the way back to Copper.

It was a fantastic ride ...great scenery ...awesome company ...no mechanicals. We finished strong and decided that another group ride in the near future would be certain.

Thanks, superdex and valygrl for making the schlep up to Copper!

"Strong" is a relative term. valygrl, Nick, thanks for babysitting me up Vail Pass. I was too deep in oxygen debt and a very thinly stretched rubber band to participate in the chatter, but I appreciate you guys staying close enough for me to listen in and take my mind off my elbows, my inner left thigh that had been rubbing my saddle bag since Ski Cooper, the two fingers on my right hand I couldn't feel anymore, the growing hotspot (since Minturn) on my right foot ....

The weather was perfect, the company was good, and we got back safe. :D

You guys missed a classic!

Hey, thanks for the super ride, telenick and superdex!

Nick is the nicest racer ever, he really meant 'no drop' and came back for me and Scott a bunch of times. Scott didn't even mention any of that pain he was having that he talked about in his last post -- takes guts to keep it to yourself when you are hurting!

These guys are fun to hang with and safe to ride with.

Let's do it again!

And pwnt.... yeah. uh... god how embarassing. I didn't bring a camera. Sorry. We'll just have to do it again, and YOU can bring it. That ride is worth repeating.

:)
