OK, so I must be absolutely nuts. Went out with all the good intentions of picking either the Cannondale Synapse Carbon or Spec Roubaix Elite. Ended up with this. A sub 20lb aluminum BMC Streetfire.

105 equipped
FSA Carbon 50/34 Compact Crank
Fulcrum Racing 7 wheelset
10-speed 12-27 cassette
Easton EC70 Fork
Easton EA50 Bars

This thing accelerates like a bat and climbs like a monkey. It's a blast to ride and the LBS spent a ton of time dialing it in.

For Stapham - The Cannondale Synapse Carbon was a smooth ride, very unlike their alum frames. However, I found it just a bit boring.

Sorry Dudes, your white bikes don't stand a chance. :)

Despite all the stories about the Wonder of C.F; I am against it. Any bike with me will have a hard life and Although I do appreciate the qualities of steel, even that is not for me.

The Tandem has a hard life hitting too many Things hard. The Bianchi MTB is now 6 years old and the hills that has gone down at speed shows how rugged the material is. The road bike is too young for me to tell how it is going to last but it does everything I want it to. All my bikes are Aluminium and it does give a harsh ride if you let it. Easy enough to lift out of the saddle when it gets too tough but that is the only possible disadvantage I can think of. The rigidity of the material though does add a lot to the ride. It does not flex under power so all the pedal movement is converted into turning the back wheel. You can feel what the bike is doing and that is great offroad. And On top of that- It is not a fragile material that has to be taken care off.

So A BMC made out of the right material seems a very good choice to me. AND as you have said "This thing accelerates like a bat and climbs like a monkey. It's a blast to ride and the LBS spent a ton of time dialing it in."

I know it is too early for a full report but let us have it as soon as you can. Only problem is you have done a DG again- He went out to buy a pair of bibshorts and The roubaix mugged him- Just don't go further down His route.

Oh before I forget- Find a couple of good hills and let me know how you get on with the Compact Gearing. I still have a bit of time to modify my order if it is not that good for hills.

Very nice. I can't wait till next year to get a roadie. Right now, I'm still stuck learning to fold the Dahon D7.

Nice bike! I'd read about their mtn.bikes in a mag., and it got a very good review. Haven't seen one in person yet, but they do stand out!

You keep saying this but remember- It is not too long till the 2007 bikes come down in price in the autumn sales. Still plenty of fun to be had by testing the current models though.

I have to wait anyhow, some unexpected bills came in when my wife went into the hospital. I did hear that Raleigh came out with a new line of bikes, for a pretty good price.

You're right. Those are the ugliest spoke reflectors I've ever seen. What were those Swiss thinking!

I must be really an old boring Luddite as I still can't get to like those sloping top tubes. They just don't look like real bikes to me, but I know they fly with the right "pilots."

Good looking bike. What am I seeing when I train my eye on the point where the top tube meets the seat tube (or seat stay or whatever you call that vertical tube that holds the seat). It looks like it is fastened with some external arangement of metal links - as though the two tubes do not actually meet. Can you train your camera on that spot and show us some closer detail?

I was quite happy with my tricked out C'dale until I wrecked it - so I had to go shopping. The new girl has a totally different personality, but she's the only one for me (right now).

The only place you can't watch is in the pelaton- so you must be the lurker at the back waiting for the team car.

Sorry, but these new bikes look like moving billboards.

Elegance and subtlety is a thing of the past.

I'm sure its a great bike, but I could never ride anything that looked like that.

This one isn't nearly as bad as their upper end "Pro Machine" bike. It looks like it should be in a NASCAR event.

I think you mean the BMC Time Machine TT 01 (http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE=PRODUCT&PRODUCT.ID=1832)...it's $12,500 just for the frameset!

http://www.competitivecyclist.com/images/products/bmc/2007/time_machine01_zoom_1.jpg

And, FWIW, it looks more like it should be in a Formula One race...not fatty N-Ass-Car. :D

Svelt new trophy bikes are very exciting, to be sure, but, yes, I've had a deeply satifying and richly rewarding relationship with my road bike, mountain bike and tandem for a quarter century.

Is that a "Yes, Dear" that I hear? "Yes, Dear, I still love you after 25 years...and I find you just as attractive as back then [in spite of the 40 pounds of weight you've put on]".

Yeah, right! You've got the itch...you know you do. :D
