Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I wish they'd chop his hands off.

The sentence is hanging in some part of the world if a person is caught stealing. Lucky guy, he was caught in a country that does not condone death penalty.
He'll get a fine, which he won't pay. Or maybe he'll be obliged to turn up to some community service. Ater all, it was only bikes he was stealing.

He stole 93 bicycles!! Incredible.
When you think about it, if each bicycle brings in 50 sterling, that's 4,650 BPS! I'm sure he was able to sell many of those bikes for more than that so it's just a conservative estimate. He must have used industrial tools to steal that many bikes.
It's sad but I'm certain another drug addict probably took his place.

Which he probably won't show up for...seeing how he didn't show up for his court hearing. Sad to see the justice system over the pond is just as warped as the one over here:(

For me, the key unanswered questions are who did he sell to and how? Would you buy a bike from the guy in that photograph?

He could sell to any ebay buyer. How would you know? You look at the seller's reputation. If he has delivered the goods to his purchasers, he'd look fine. He might have 100% positive reputation.

Memo to self, don't mess with English bicyclists. :)

Good point. There are probably a lot of private transactions where the buyer ought to smell a rat, but figures that if he doesn't *know* the item is stolen then that's good enough. And there are probably plenty of buyers who wouldn't care if it had been stolen.

Another good point, but I don't know if the bike thief in this case was selling the bikes that way. Were there follow up stories that said this?
I do remember a folding society news item a while back about a ring of thieves who were selling stolen Bromptons on Ebay. When I bought my own Raleigh Twenty on Ebay, this sort of thing hadn't occurred to me, but now it would be a worry.

No I don't know anything but what was in that article referred to above. It's just conjecture. It would be a good way to unload the odd bike if you were a thieving rat though. It might be wise to email an ebay seller and ask if they have original paperwork like receipts, but to be honest, I probably couldn't supply that for all my posessions - well - I certainly couldn't.
Another way might be to ask for the serial number in advance of bidding, but they could send you any kind of made up rubbish couldn't they. Maybe ask for a photograph of the serial number.
It's difficult buying second hand with all the stolen stuff floating about.
