Tour de Yorba Linda/Anaheim Hills
Place: Yorba Regonal Park, LaPalma Ave, Dirt Parking Lot
Distance: approx. 45 miles
Start Time: 9:30am
Climbing: 5000 feet
approx 3 hours

Come join me on my Wednesday torture fest. Climb with me on streets known as Rim Crest, Hidden Hills, and Stagecoach Rd. Many of these climbs are over 10-12%! There are plenty of chances to bail because some of the climbs are out and back plus we will never go outside of a 4 mile radius from the start. I don't have route sheets but if there is enough interest I will break down and create one. PM me and I will give you my cell if you want to join in.

Edit: I just made the route slip (http://home.earthlink.net/~shellenbargers/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/tour_de_yorba_linda_anaheim_hills.xls) in Excel

This profile is from my home and back.

Jon, since I'm taking this Wednesday morning off, I'm almost tempted to take you up on it.

I said almost.

Perhaps if you started at 6am... And perhaps if temps aren't projected in the high 80s... Perhaps if you bring a tow rope for the plodding tri girl! (See me use that tri card while I can!) :p

I though that tri folk don't do hills.

I wish I could start that early but child care is my issue. I will bring a rope for you, I like a challenge.

Tri folk who never come close to a podium in triathlon... and who weigh 110 pounds... and who build 15-lb. CF bikes with a compact double... and who are gluttons for punishment... do hills.

Or at least try to do hills.

I wish I could start that early but child care is my issue..

Last summer I was mistaken for a 12-year-old boy. Does that count?

I am interested Jon but is it really 10-12 %?

The second climb is 1.8 miles 840 feet with an average of 9% it has pitches of 12-14% there is a flat spot in the middle. The thrid climb is 1 mile 600 feet with and average of 11.2% with no mercy, every time I look down I see 12-13%! So yes most of the climbs are 10-12%, although short in length are very steep. I am working on a 10,000 foot century including this route but going into Orange hills and Santa Ana as well.

Your going to have to change my name to Vertical Jon:)

I ride about half of this route 2-3 times a week, in fact today as well. Yup, 10%+ on most. I find Serrano a bit trying during the week 'cause of the heavy traffic around 5pm. There are some good, but fairly short climbs in the Orange Hills as mentioned that are easily connected.

Serrano isn't that bad in the morning, but I wouldn't go near it at 5pm. What half of my route do you ride?

I'm usually in the area of Cannon/Imperial, Serrano, Canyon Rim, and Nohl Ranch. My route takes me up Taft, to Cannon rt and I make my way over to the south side of the Newport Bl climb, up Canyon View, up the Chapman grade, down Orange Park to Santiago, back to Cannon, where I do various climbs in your area, depending on how much pain I feel like inflicting upon myself. Still, it's only between 2-2.5k ft depending, according to Bikely.com, in around 28 miles, back to my house.

You should do the Yorba Linda side of my route. Just those three climbs are around 2600ft. Very little traffic on the climbs and very steep.

Those are good climbs - I do them all the time. Serrano will be tough that late in the ride.

Another tough hill I've found recently is Casino Ridge - Left off of San Antonio at the first stop sign as you descend.

Watch out riding as you near the corner of Weir Canyon and Serrano (where the two turn lanes turn right.) For some reason, people drive there like they're racing for their lives.

I've been thinking about changing it to:L Woodcreek, L Larkwood, R Canyon Vista. Cyn Vista turns into Serrano. See map.

I just love the fact the ride is listed as 45 miles and proximate completion time is 3 hours. I do a similar ride and it takes me closer to 5 hrs. Maybe 4 1/2 on a good day!

Oh well you guys, go have fun!!! If I'm out there doing my usually 3 mph up those hills, don't make me feel bad when you blast by at 10!!!! :(

I never would have guessed that road went all the way through - thanks for posting that - I'm actually going to be riding by there today. I'd say about 40% of the time I ride through that intersection I have an altercation with a driver (and I usually don't have any problems with people.) That detour will be much safer.

I rode that today, and there's a chain blocking Riverview (just strung up across the road) at the back of that apartment complex. It's easy to dismount and step over, but turning at Riverview (the next street) would avoid having to get off the bike. Actually, I like the riverview route - that's a good little climb, then you need to start on a hill after climbing over the chain.

On those steeper hills, it's always funny how much time it takes to catch and pass someone who's walking up the sidewalk.

Well my day was cut short due to my son's school director called and told me he needs to go home for coughing too much. So there I am on Nohl Ranch and Serrano heading home. I bailed off my course on Cannon and Serrano. Still got in 4150 feet of climbing though. The day started out warm and got cooking on the climbs, if you look at the temps on my computer you will see how hot it was.

This was only 3 miles in to the ride and it was 85

Here you go Vertical bob! 15%

This is what 15% looks like, doesn't look that bad.
http://home.earthlink.net/~shellenbargers/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dsc04479.jpg

I hit 18% at the top!
http://home.earthlink.net/~shellenbargers/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dsc04480.jpg

Would have been a better view from the top but it was hazy.
http://home.earthlink.net/~shellenbargers/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dsc04481.jpg

Here is the top of Hidden Hills Rd. I think the sweat was dripping in my eyes here.
http://home.earthlink.net/~shellenbargers/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dsc04482.jpg

Notice 12.8 miles into the ride and I already have 2425 Feet of climbing in. Hot, that's an understatement!
http://home.earthlink.net/~shellenbargers/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dsc04483.jpg

This is what my ride looked like. I would have had 2 more climbs and I would have been well over 5000 feet!

The route slip is posted at the top of this post. I will be changing it after today's ride. I made some detours that were well worth it and I will be updating this route slip soon.

Let's go riding! I usually ride Tues. or Wed. mornings around 9:00 am 50-60 miles.

My other computer has me clocked at 53mph! I like that one better.

That's decending Camino de Bryant. It's a mile long at 12%. No traffic!

Ahh yes Casino Ridge, thanks for the suggestion. It added 371 feet in 0.7 miles with pitches of 15-18%. It only has a 9.8% average over 0.7 miles because the dip in the middle kills the average. I also took Riverview off Santa Ana Cyn to Canyon Vista to Serrano. Very nice.

I love my VDO MC1.0+ but it didn't have heart rate so I got the Ciclosport HAC4 with Hactronic. It hooks up to the computer with usb and the software is a little clunky but workable. I heard that VDO is working on a new one with heart rate and downloadable stats.

When I "discovered" Casino Ridge a couple of weeks ago, I climbed it on mile 45 towards the end of a ride (I had looped through Corona, Chino, and Carbon Canyon Road) - I know it felt like parts of it were 18%! A guy who was walking out to get his mail on one of the steeper parts was shocked to see me riding a bike up.

It's not on any map as of yet. Bastanchury has been extended all the way to Village Center. Just use Yorba Linda on your map just to get through.

Thanks! I did not know Bastanchury reached that far I usually ride Bastanchury in the opposite direction. I would ride with you but I melt in this heat. If I do you loop I would have to start around 6am to avoid the heat.

Have you done Hidden Hills Rd. yet? I think that one is harder because it is almost twice as long.
