Hi all,
My weight loss has stalled and I'm still here. So instead of rewarding myself with upgrades, I'm now motivating myself with upgrades :D
Anyway, I just scored a new Chorus crankset (thanks to EUI....eBaying Under the Influence) and need to buy a square tapered bottom bracket.
The price difference between these old stock 2006 BB's are pretty small now, like 20-30 bucks sometimes so I wanna go for the Record BB. But its hollow and uses carbon fibers (as opposed to the Chorus which does not)....do you know if there's a weight limit?
If you use one, can you tell me your experience and weight?
Thank you much!
-Tom
PS If you know of cheap places to get some, that would be a great plus :D

I seem to remember Campy saying 80kg or around 176-lb for all of their stuff. Check their website. I've never seen a weight limit listed for specific components. Italians in Italy must be smaller than Italian americans in my family :D

Yeah I saw that blanket statement too.... me thinks its legalese for "cover thy ass".
But I'm hoping to hear from Clydes who've been riding Record BB's for thousands of miles :-)

For the money, you might look into a Phil Wood BB, which are nearly indestructible. I've had varying luck with lower-end Campy BB's (AC-S, Centaur) but never tried Record.

Campagnolo has a 70 kg weight limit on their parts.

Agreed. Unfortunately I can't help there - I'm only a part time Clyde but I have about 4000 miles on a Bianchi oem titanium hollow spindle bb and it's doing fine but I have no idea who actually made it, assuming it wasn't Bianchi. It was typically found on Chorus equipped Bianchis instead of the Campy bb/crank.

I've been riding a Record BB for about a year and a half. I weighed 261 when i started and am down in the 220 range now...i think the weight limit is just legal jargon

Just met with Bill Ron and he says the same. Record it will be! (if I can find a good deal)

I'll second the vote for Phil Wood BB's. I replaced the 7410 Dura Ace BB in my Ritchey with one after 15,000 miles and it's just peachy. You do need a competent LBS, or special tools to install it, however.

Phil BB's...costs about the same as Record....is it as good or better?
no one stocks em though, called around, special order (ie full list price) only...

Personally, I think if Campy doesn't want to sell their stuff to us, we shouldn't buy it. Clydes of the world unite. Boycott wussy Italian bike parts. Real men ride Japanese.

The Wt Limit is a bogus issue (an out of control Urban Legend created by someone at Shimano). I have a record BB and a chorus one. I am now 205# but I have come down from 235#. The carbon piece is only decorative and not really structural. The Cups and spindle are the support for the bearings. You would have to really abuse something to break it. Weight won't do it alone. Well...maybe a carbon seatpost...We shouldn't be using them anyhow...not safe. I have a number of bikes. One has a C-record gruppo (8spd) and I have more than 25K on the bike. Wheels are like new as are all the other parts. Had to change an inside chain ring and 2 cassettes otherwise the components are wonderful. Don't overreact on the boycott issue. I have 10spd chorus on one bike and Record on the other...no issues. I also have a 2001 Daytona (Centaur) on a Torelli Cyclocross bike. I really abuse that bike: snow, mud, washboard roads, dusty trails...and my work commuter...zero problems...what can I say.
Phil Wood BBs are great but way more expensive than Record BB for the equivalent materials. Just priced them at the NAHMBS in San Jose.

Thanks deanster! Bill Ron told me the same thing. I ordered the Record BB from LickBikes, can't wait to install the bb and cranks next week!
