View Full Version : Celebrating with a Guinness

My '07 feature bike is ready for the Wisconsin tour this year. I've always ridden a different bike each year (new projects to try out each year). And last year was on a recumbent because of back problems (huge success: I gave away my 06 feature ride to another person on the trip (http://dbg.home.att.net/featurebike2.htm) and picked up a Burley Canto).

But this year an old favorite frame returns with new everything. I'm featuring a light build tourer this year and riding the smallest tires yet at 700x25 (gatorskins). 853 steel frame (older Lemond BuenosAires with a slightly stretched wheelbase), carbon fork, all new 105 lower drivetrain triple with SRAM 11-26 rear cluster for added range, ultegra shifters and brakes. I've wanted to check out the short reach ultegra shifters for a while since I've never felt comfortable braking from the drops. We'll see. Handbuilt ultegra hub wheels on aerohead rims including offset rear for more even spoke tension. 28 spoke front built by a local expert who I wanted to meet, 32 spoke offset rear built by me (note this violates my rule of "no low spoke counts on a touring bike", but I'm sticking with this). I didn't post a picture because I haven't wrapped the bars yet (not sure what color / pattern to go with) and I haven't mounted the GPS, computer, and iPod holder yet. But it rides and shifts like butter right now. I think I'll have another Guinness.

OK, I'm stuck. These little decisions just slay me. I can't decide what color wrap to use. I'm tired of standard black. Any suggestions?

What is this? I have small hands and the reach from the drops bothers me also. Sounds like a beautiful bike. Enjoy the Guinnness

(it's navy blue with yellow bands. Carbon fork is black weave)

Guinness was good. Here is a link describing them. I won't have any feedback until after I've ridden with them a while. http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=451 (but I got mine on ebay for ~$200. search for shimano st-r600. buyer beware.)

White tape will make it faster. That is, if you follow DG's logic in his white bike thread.

Yellow tape would be my guess.

Yellow: I like the color because of its visibility.
White: Definitely adds speed.
Orange: a long shot but coupled with navy blue it fits the local sports teams (da Bears, U-of-Ill, my kids' HighSchool)

+1 for yellow

or maybe a matching blue if you like the darker colours

or a mottled yellow and blue

It is hard to make those final choices!!!!!!

I lean towards yellow but it's unlikely I'd match the muted yellow bands on the bike. Also my kids unanimously voted white. These little decisions slay me.

Another topic: Suspension seatpost - I've used them in the past on all tourers for comfort. I'm not a weight weenie (I can quit anytime I want!), but suspension seatpost adds 13 oz. Is it worth it?

It is for me. I like mine, especially when I am sitting there for several hours at a time.

Suspension post for me are only usefull when the going gets rough. And if I can see it coming- Then I can get out of the saddle. On top of that- Leg length alter unless you have it set up for to only take the big hits. On top of that the cheap ones don't work properly and on top of that If it is set up hard to only cater for the hard hits- they still hurt.

I have one on the Tandem but this is a Cane Creek Thudbuster. Works a treat but expensive.
