Road Cycling - Wayne's World - No Longer a Newbie (long)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I know you are trying to figure out what Wayne's World has to do with cycling. And to be honest it doesn't, with the exception that I spent the last five minutes of my ride saying to myself "I'm not worthy." I didn't mean it in the sense that something was wrong because every thing was so alright it was amazing.

Today was my first real ride on my new bike, and let me tell you she is a gem. The shifting is smooth and I got nods from the hard core roadies that usually ignore me. I did a couple of spirnts and was called a show off by some guy that hated being passed by a girl, so I let him pass me so his ego could recover;)

But the best part of the entire ride was that for the first time I was moving fast enough for some one to draft off me. Not once but TWICE. The first time was for about 1 mile on a decline. I kept looking back to make sure that was what was happening. When I stopped at my usual spot to stretch out the guy looked a bit peeved I wasn't going to help him get up the major hill that was coming up. The second time was on my way back to my car, I was headed back up the hill where the first drafting took place. I turn around and there is another roadie on my wheel. Now mind you on this particular stretch I am usually moving so slow it is pitiful. But today I was moving and was only passed twice (yippeee). About 1/4 of a mile from the water stop I told him I had to stop because I had a cramp in my back (which I did). He asked me if I was ok and then said he was gettiing ready to move ahead of me to pull. I told him thanks and that I needed to stretch for a sec.

Once I got to the water fountain he was there fiddling with his seat, so I asked him if he needed help or my allen wrench. he said no and thanked me. Then he asked me about my back, and I told him I was fine. I filled up my water bottle and watched him ride off to check his seat adjuctments. I headed off in the opposite direction to go back to my car. About 2 miles later he catches up and pulls in front of me and says he was going to pull for a while. I thanked him and we chatted for a bit. When I got to my usual cool down spot I told him to go ahead because my car was so close. He told me to have a good afternoon.

Today was the most amazing ride of my life, all becuase I finally felt like my hardwork and patience was fianlly paying off. I haven't stopped smiling and I can't wait to get back on my bike in the morning. I am sorry this was so long and incoherent, but I felt like I was going to bust if I didn't share. And I figured you guys would understand :D

I hope when I finally spend the big bucks on the right bike (maybe next year) that my first day with it is half as much fun as yours!

We understand and are envious! Thanks for sharing it with us!

cyclochica,

Thank you for sharing your "most excellent" day with us. You know that you've crossed over into the next stage of your cycling when you can pull others when in the past you would have been passed. What a great feeling that must have been for you.

May I suggest that if someone doesn't like the fact that you passed them that you do not slow your pace just allow them to pass you so their "ego could recover." That person will just have to deal with their narcissistic injury. As you said, your hard work and patience is starting to pay off. So go out there and burn up the road! You've earned it.

your training and time put in makes you worthy. that is the one thing about biking. you can't be a poser for long. you can look the part, but you can't fake the time and effort and your knowledge that it takes to ride....like you feel right now. here's hoping that you have more reaffirming efforts like this one again soon.

Ahhh....life is good! Congrats! :)

Hey, did you test out your SPD? If you think you're fast now, you'll faster in your clipless.

Thanks guys. I went to sleep a happy camper last night and woke up this morning ready to ride. I have toe clips on the bike now, and I am thinking of putting the clipless on tonight and practicing, but it all depends on how my knees feel. I took on a couple of hills this morning and want to make sure I don't end up sore.

I know next time I will not slow my pace for anyone. If I pass you I pass you, if you want to keep up hit the gym like I do.

It is nice to hear someone have a pleasant ride. I am glad that you enjoyed your bike on its first day.

good stuff :)

You'll have even more fun when you start riding in a pace line with 10 or so other people down the road heh heh (although I sometimes feel all that spandex to be overwhelming)

Wait until you hook up with a couple of riders who are at your skill level. You can run pace lines and work together and really rock. Now theres something to shoot for.

It's amazing that such a relatively simple machine can do so much for the soul. It's all good.

I find clipping out (Time ATACs) almost impossible from the top of the pedal stroke irrespective of which shoes the cleats are in (each cleat is slightly different). Clipping out at the bottom does require some quick reactions, though, in emergency situations.
